My professional career started as a Mechanical Engineer in the Petro-Chemical industry, where I gained a tremendous amount of experience for 5 years. After completing a Masters degree, I was involved in world leading research in the field of mine ventilation and cooling for 8 years. A new opportunity caused me to make a major career change, and I studied medicine and became a Medical Doctor. This has been a rewarding career for the last 10 years. I would like to explore new opportunities in Medicine, Engineering or combinations of the two fields.

4.0 Work Experience as a Medical Doctor (2006 - current) 4.1 Medical – General Practice (March 2015 – Present) I started a new General Medical Practice in Gordon’s Bay in 2015, which has become well established during the last five years. The work involves primary health care, as well as performing minor surgical procedures and emergency care. 4.2 Stellenbosch HIV Clinics (Aug 2013 - Feb 2015) I worked in Stellenbosch at the government HIV clinics. This involved full responsibility as a Medical Doctor for four of the eight Government Clinics in the Stellenbosch area. The focus was on managing complicated HIV patients (approximately 1500), as well as managing non- HIV patients (referred by primary health care nurses) with acute and chronic medical problems. RESUME of Dr Martin Thom (2020)

4.3 Community Service (Jul 2012 - June 2013)

All South African doctors have to do one year of paid community service at government facilities. I worked in Worcester at the Community Clinic, which involved approximately 25 consultations a day with primary health care patients. I did overtime (30 hours per week) at the Casualty section of Worcester hospital, where I was fully responsible for treating all emergencies (gunshots, stabbings, medical emergencies etc.), with the assistance of an intern. 4.4 Medical Internship (Jul 2010 – Jun 2012)

After completing a medical degree, I did my Internship at the Pietermaritzburg complex of hospitals and clinics (Greys, Edendale, and Northdale). This involved a rotation through the various specialities: Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Orthopaedics, Anaesthetics, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology. South African Hospitals are excellent training grounds for Interns, because of the opportunities to take on responsibilities and perform procedures, which would normally be done by specialists in most other countries. 5.0 Work Experience as a Mechanical Engineer (1991-2005) 5.1 CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial research): Division of Mining Technology (Miningtek) (Sep 1997 - Dec 2005)

I spent a year backpacking overseas, followed by a year doing an MSc (Eng), before working for Miningtek (division of the CSIR) for eight years. Miningtek is recognised as a world leader in mining research, mainly because they enabled operation in the extreme conditions of many South African gold mines (depths of 5000 m where virgin rock temperatures exceed 60 o

C). I

worked as part of a team of 12 people, which focussed on optimising the ventilation and cooling of these mines. The research mainly involved computer modelling, but experimental prototypes were built and tested, and experimental data was collected underground in the mines. Several new cooling and energy recovery systems were developed, but the most useful outcomes were several computer programs that are still being used by Ventilation Engineers on most South African gold and platinum mines, as well as internationally. I left the CSIR in December 2005 to pursue a lifelong passion in medicine.

5.2 SASOL (Jan 1991 - Aug 1995)

SASOL is a large company that produces petrol and chemicals from coal. They provided me with a bursary to study Engineering. After completing my studies, and one year of compulsory military service, I started work in Mechanical Maintenance at the Gas Processing and Power Station departments. This involved management of the daily mechanical maintenance, and managing large projects during factory shutdowns and boiler overhauls. After three years, I transferred to Sasol Technology (Sastech), where I worked in the Mechanical Design department for two years, designing repairs, modifications and new equipment. I was appointed by the Government Inspector as the responsible signing authority for the mechanical design output of approximately 10 per cent of the Sasol Secunda works, during the second year. I left Sasol after a management buy-out of Sastech
