Experience
Design Engineer (Contractor), Caterpillar Inc., Lafayette, IN, US June 2018 – February 2020 Managed design control ownership of crankshafts and bearings as a subject matter expert for 2 large-engine product lines to ensure superior product performance, durability, reliability, quality and serviceability globally. Performed design work necessary to support the introduction of new large-engine product generations, including conducting baseline study, FMEAs, validation and development test planning, etc. Led external supplier meetings on continuous improvements and APQP regarding new materials and improving their manufacturing processes.
Worked directly at the manufacturing plant for real-time response to production and quality needs. Led a 17-month continuous product improvement (CPI) project to resolve a costly field issue related to vibrations and metal fatigue utilizing the DMAIC methodology.
- Implemented 2 permanent corrective actions saving the company millions USD of warranty cost.
- Drove the production process change of a core component at overseas supplier sites.
- Collaborated with manufacturing engineering to put in place rework procedures and defined engineering acceptance criteria for both local value stream teams and in-field service teams.
- Provided specifications for reuse and salvage guidelines and service literature for reman centers and dealers.
Lead PM for a new simulation and testing technology to improve a core component bench fatigue test accuracy by 10% utilizing the DMAIC model.
- Researched current techniques and developed new methods to bridge the gap between FEA-based simulation technology results and actual test bench strain gauging methods under a constrained budget and timeline.
- Managed, directed and prioritized project budget to achieve milestone goals and timelines using Oracle Primavera P6.
Led effective analysis of 66 core engine failures to determine root causes and implemented corrective actions best suited for improvements.
- Advised materials lab engineers, quality personnel and technicians pertaining to failed component analysis using SEM, optical microscopy, CMM, cross-sectioning and surface profiling.
- Authored final engineering failure analysis reports and presented analytical results and conclusions to both internal and external teams, including service engineers, stakeholders and suppliers. Engineering Intern, Caterpillar R&D Center Co., Ltd., Wuxi, Jiangsu, China May 2016 – August 2016 Interned in the performance and emissions team for global engine development, assisted validation engineers with engine testing for higher performance and reduced emissions per ISO requirements.
