Nakuru Level Five Hospital previously referred to as Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital is a referral government tertiary facility in Nakuru, Kenya. It has 15 general wards with a bed capacity of approximately 622 with a bed occupancy of averagely 120% that is 720 patients. The facility also has a new maternity wing that was opened in October 2018 with a bed capacity of 250.The hospital provides medical, nursing and other therapeutic services. These includes emergency and outpatient care, ambulance services, maternal and child health care, surgical procedures, cardiology, cancer care, HIV care, orthopedic, dental care, ENT and ophthalmology services, pharmacy and laboratory services. The medical unit has both male and female wards admitting 36 patients on average per ward with various medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, malaria chronic obstructive airway diseases, cardiac conditions, meningitis and anemia among others. The patients are provided with total nursing care with nurse to patient ratio of 1:19 together with the patient attendants, the intern nurses, upgrading nurses and students. The unit nurses use nursing process to provide care to the patients to include assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of patients’ needs. Evans Sunrise Medical Centre is a private secondary level facility in Nakuru that provides a wide range of medical services to include; medical consultation, nursing services, ambulance evacuation services, high dependency unit services, operating theatres, maternal and child health services and psychiatry service. It has 75 bed capacity which care for inpatient and day care patients. The medical surgical wards provide medical and nursing services to patients admitted with various conditions that is; hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart diseases, cerebral vascular accident, malaria, head injury, meningitis, tuberculosis, pneumonia, orthopedic cases and burns among others. Outpatient and emergency services include ambulance emergency response, basic and cardiac life support, care of patients with trauma, fractures, burns, asthmatic attack, diabetic ketoacidosis and hypertensive crisis. The patient nurse ratio is 1:6 with averagely two nurses per shift in each department with outpatient handling an average of 100 a day.
