Formation of dipolar vortex in density stratified medium Purdue University, USA RESEARCH ASSISTANT August 2018 - March 2019
• Proposed to study the evolution of 2D dipolar vortex in density stratified medium to further understanding of the movement of fluid and organisms in various naturally occurring stratified medium like the atmosphere and the sea
• Designed and built an experimental set-up from scratch to study the evolution of 2D dipoles from a fluid jet in a density stratified medium using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)
Biomedical Imaging Projects Purdue University, USA RESEARCH ASSISTANT August 2018 - March 2019
• Assisted in the experimental verification of effect of gravity on blood flow and stress patterns in cerebral aneurysms using 3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry (3D-PTV), thereby challenging the efficacy of measurements made based on MRI images. Shake-the-Box PTV was done by simulating blood flow through several models of aneurysms in both vertical and horizontal positions to determine the difference in stress values in both cases
• Worked on determining the hemolysis effect of Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD) by determining the blood flow pattern in the heart. PIV processing was done on echo images from artificially induced blood flow in a pig’s heart with varying levels of LVAD support. Higher level of LVAD support showed a significant increase in the risk of hemolysis
• Worked on refining pressure and velocity calculations from echocardiogram images to reduce dependence on calculations made by com- panies that manufacture echocardiography devices
Simulation of fluid flow in Hydraulic Fracturing Purdue University, USA SUMMER RESEARCH INTERN May 2017 - July 2017
• Designed a computational model of the cracks formed during the oil and gas extraction method of hydraulic fracturing
• Conducted rudimentary flow analysis in the fracturing area, in both axisymmetric and 3D models using OpenFOAM with water as the fracking fluid and analyzed the stress patterns in the fractures formed Simulation of flow of water-sand mixture in Hydraulic Fracturing Indian Institute of Technology Madras UNDERGRADUATE THESIS November 2017 - April 2018
• Implemented the coupled CFD-DEM (Computational Fluid Dynamics – Discrete Element Method) model by coupling OpenFOAM and LIG- GHTS to model the granular flow during fracking
• Performedanalysisforfracturemodels:Khristianovic-Geertsma-deKlerkmodel,Perkins-Kern-NordgrenmodelandRadialFracturemodel
• Improved the efficiency of the fracturing process by optimising the water to sand ratio in the mixture Simulation of Pressure Anomaly in a Solid Motor due to Debris Ejection Indian Space Research Organisation ENGINEERING INTERN December 2016 - January 2017
• Theorised that pressure spikes observed during launch of some Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLV) may be due to ejection of debris particles from solid motors through its nozzle
• Conducted flowfieldstudiesthroughanozzleandmodifiedthemodeltoincorporatetwo-phaseflow,byassumingLagrangianparticulate flow in a turbulent, viscous medium using the Macroscopic Particle Model in ANSYS Fluent
• Participated in the realization of subscale simulation rocket motor, built to validate the pressure spike by embedding ferrobestos particle in propellant grain and validated theoretical calculations with the experimental results obtained from the test Design of Heat Exchanger for Organic Rankine Cycle Indian Institute of Science SUMMER RESEARCH INTERN May 2016 - July 2016
• Designed an experimental setup for testing conventional and unconventional turbomachinery in Organic Rankine cycle
• Designed a shell and tube heat exchanger to be used as a condenser for the test rig and simulated the two-phase flow of working fluid in the Heat exchanger in COMSOL and determined the variations in efficiencies for different working fluids in the cycle Other Projects
• Studied the hemodynamics in the thoracic and abdominal aorta by building computational models from CT scan images and simulating blood flow in the aorta using the open-source software SimVascular 2019
• Performed detailed computational analysis of fluid motion through a backward-facing step by implementing concepts of CFD in C++, as a part of the coursework on “Foundations of CFD” 2017
• Designed and modeled a Kaplan turbine and a Pelton turbine based on specified parameters, as a part of the coursework on “Design of Hydroturbines” 2017
• Built a self-balancing robot as apartofthecourseworkon“InstrumentationandControl”byimplementingProportional-Integral-Derivative control using Arduino micro-controller 2016
