Primary duty: Vascular Access Nurse. As the vascular access nurse, I was responsible for responding to requests to gain peripheral vascular access on patients who had barriers to IV access. While performing over 25,000 vascular encounters, I held a consistent 97% documented success rate on some of the most difficult and high acuity patients. As the vascular access nurse, I was assigned to support the Rapid Response Team as needed to obtain multiple, large bore IV’s during rapid response calls when placement and accuracy were paramount.
Secondary duty: Supplemental coverage nurse. As the SCN, I was assigned to provide coverage on floors as needed to close gaps due to staffing deficiencies. Because assignments varied, I became well versed in the multiple units’ policies and procedures as well unit nuance. Assignments varied between medical surgical units, the rehabilitation unit, the emergency department, and the neonatal intensive care unit.

As the Leading Petty Officer of the Urgent Care Clinic, I held many responsibilities in the administrative/managerial and clinical aspects of a very high paced 24-hour clinic. My military and medical expertise was utilized as I managed a department of more than 12 enlisted members and was the liaison between the nursing staff, senior officers, paramedics and EMT’s under my charge. I was recognized on numerous occasions as a strong leader which culminated in 4 nominations for Sailor of the Quarter and was awarded Sailor of the Quarter for 3rd quarter of 2007. While managing schedules, disciplinary infractions and education/training tasks, I maintained a high level of medical knowledge and skill by staying involved in the daily clinical tasks. I became the person of choice to perform clinical duties including suturing, cardiac evaluation, IV medication therapy, poison ingestion intervention, mental health evaluation and treatment in an emergent setting and preparing patients for emergent surgery. I was also the enlisted leader of the cardiac emergency response team.
