Project: Energy Optimization of Screw Extrusion

Objective: To reduce the environmental and economic harms of excessive energy uses by achieving a minimum level of energy efficiency for the extrusion process

Evaluated materials used to produce fibers that have different melting point to minimize energy use

Modeled and simulated the process using MATLAB to determine the optimum screw angle

Performed HAZOP and FMEA of the extrusion process and equipment

Conducted economic analysis of the final process and calculated the return of investment

Senior Design Project

Project: Solvent Recycle from a Siloxane Process

Aug 2019 – Dec 2019

Objective: To recover the p-xylene solvent which is used to separate acetonitrile and toluene in two distillation columns

Designed a process using Aspen Plus for siloxane polymerization unit for acetonitrile and toluene reuse

Minimized number of column stages, reflux ratio, reactor temperature to reduce operating cost

Analyzed safety issues arising with the process design using HAZOP and FMEA

Conducted economic analysis of the design and calculated the return of investment
