PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT, LIFE CARE CENTER OF CITRUS COUNTY

I work in a rehab hospital that specializes in the geriatric population. My caseload consists of 10-14 patients, and diagnoses varied. Our therapeutic objective is to improve muscle strength, gait patterns, and endurance for activity prior to a patient’s discharge.

FEBRUARY 2020 to MARCH 2020

PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT, FYZICAL at PELICAN BAY

I worked at an outpatient clinic as a Travel PTA, seeing 9-11 patients daily, usually in 40 minute intervals. Comorbidities ranged from post-op jt replacements to deconditioned patients to vertigo and high fall risk. We used WebPT as our documentation system and medbridge for HEP. Our therapeutic objective was to improve QOL and improve functional strength and dynamic balance.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

6 WEEK ROTATION, JUN 2017, INPATIENT ACUTE CARE, GENERAL MEDICINE STUDENT PTA, UF HEALTH SHANDS HOSPITAL, GAINESVILLE During this clinical setting, I was able to treat patients on the general medicine floors. I treated patients with diabetes, kidney infections, Crohn's, dementia, total hip/knee, etc. By the end of the 6 weeks, I was writing 80-100% of our patient treatments. Patient population varied between the ages of 18-90s, but 30s-80s was the most common in our patient list.

8 WEEK ROTATION, OCT 2017, OUTPATIENT REHAB

STUDENT PTA, REQUEST PHYSICAL THERAPY, GAINESVILLE During this clinical setting, I was able to treat patients and practice my therapeutic exercises, as well as modalities. By the end of the rotation, I was documenting 100% of the treatments. I, also, was able to tend to 90-100% of the caseload, and delegate patients to appropriate personnel. Patient population varied between the ages of 17-80 and diagnoses mostly included musculoskeletal and balance deficits. Our caseload consisted mostly of deconditioned patients.

NOVEMBER 2017

STUDENT VOLUNTEER, FREE HEALTH CLINIC, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC During my trip, I was able to use and learn new medical words in Spanish. During a five-day period, we cared to over 700 patients, giving them medication, treating their wounds, and much more. We came across several patients needing musculoskeletal care, body mechanics, and such, in which, I was able to teach patients several exercises.

ACTIVITIES

I enjoyed my time in the clinical rotations mentioned above, especially my volunteer experience. I supported the physical therapist and physical therapist assistant in patient treatments and was able to use their teachings and design my own patient- centered therapy sessions. I was able to utilize Spanish when needed with patients. I am an active member of the APTA and FPTA and have attended several conferences.
