Dear hiring committee,
I am excited to apply for the position of Research Assistant with The Brookings Institution. As a recent graduate with both a Master’s Degree in Global Studies and a graduate certificate in Homeland Security, I can bring a wide range of skills to the table. My independent study focused on how states may capitalize on natural resource endowments, such as oil and diamonds, and still avoid the crippling effects related to the resource curse through effective policies and institutions. Other multifaceted course work and research included comparing the root causes of state collapse, a thorough analysis of all 16 critical infrastructure sectors of the Department of Homeland Security, and multiple papers in cyber security and biological terrorism. All of this builds on my Bachelors of Arts degree, majoring in Biology. Between an understanding of the science behind the modern world, and the means by which it is governed, I can provide a unique set of skills and tools.
Beyond my coursework, my professional career has taught me a great deal as well. Working in jewelry sales requires collaboration, individual work, and personal accountability. Customers have options as to where they may shop, and thus must be convinced of the trustworthiness and value of our store, as well as products and services offered, often in a quick manner. Building relationships is a critical cornerstone to achieve this goal, as well as knowledge of products, trends, and attention to individual customers’ concerns. I also have teaching experience from substitute teaching, often for days at a time in the same subject.
My personal life has found me more active and engaged in my community. I recently joined the Freemasons to become more involved in charity. Within my first three months, I helped organize and spearhead a blood drive, with other lodges quickly following suit. I also volunteer at least one week a year at a church camp.
Thank you for your consideration for this position,
Andy Johnson
