Desired Position: Airport Security Board Screening Summary

I have over four years experience working at Headingley Correctional Centre and I have been interested in pursuing a new career.

I have dealt with many offenders ranging from medium to maximum security levels and offenders with varying charges. I have had the opportunity to learn a tremendous amount about the judicial system and how it functions. I have gained excellent experience involving high security with offenders regarding transporting offenders from custody to hospitals and other situations where offenders are leaving the Correctional Centre. It involved knowing all the security procedures needed to escort offenders outside the Correctional Centre. I also gained excellent experience with case management skills and i have worked with probation officers in the past regarding planning for offenders when released from custody as well as updates on their behaviour and programs taken while in custody. I have a very good understanding of the Aboriginal culture, aboriginal history, challenges that will be faced outside of custody and challenges offenders face when released. I am currently and for the past eight years, been working with high risk youth as a foster parent and have excellent skills dealing with this population of youth as well as adults and their continuously changing needs. Accomplishments

Over the past eight years, I have been and still currently fostering/mentoring high risk youth. My wife and I have had 2-3 high risk youth living with us full time in the past eight years. During these years I have learned about their childhood and the trauma they had experienced. From poverty, alcoholism, multiple types of abuse and abandonment. These youth have had challenges ranging from mild to very sever behavioural/addiction issues. I feel that i can relate to youth as well as adults who have lived through difficult and challenging life experiences. I have also seen some of these youth now enter the adult correctional system and have a good understanding of the trauma they have previously dealt with and what leads them to pro criminal activity and anti social patterns.

Experience

Job duty consists of safety and security of the staff and offenders. Providing case management tasks to 4-5 offenders on a year- round basis. With a focus on specific charges they have been convicted of and how to remain out of custody and avoid criminal activity in the future. I also ran informational program once a month, with a group of 10-20 offenders attending. During the program, I go over CBT (Cognitive behavioural therapy) exercises. These are techniques to help change current habits and promote pro social attitudes and healthy living. There are several different programs focusing on drugs/alcohol addictions, as well as encouragement and techniques to help offenders find employment. This also involves suggestions/ideas on ways to spend their recreational/leisure time. This would involve a strong emphasis on how/who offenders spend their time with, as well as where/when not to spend their time. There is also a CBT exercise focusing on how the offenders can improve their family lives and how to maintain their current level of success when released from custody. One of the most effective CBT exercises is focused on anger management and ways to deal with anger issues. I have also been on many escort shifts where I have been responsible for the safety and security of my partner, myself, the public and the offenders. 04/2014 to 08/2018.

Education and Training

In 2011, I took a training opportunity with B&L Resources as a foster parent for high-risk inner-city youth. This provided me with the skills to work effectively and successfully with high risk youth. Along with fostering, I applied to Manitoba Corrections and was able to successfully complete the training program with an 86% average. In the past four years working at the correctional facility, I have dealt with intensive security issues, while dealing with offenders in distress. I respond to code calls on a regular basis and I have a good understanding of high security situations and walking into unknown/unsecured locations and environments which include hazardous elements. I have also gained excellent knowledge regarding case management with the offenders. Case management consisted of numerous duties such as; custody release plans, case plans, case contacts, suicide assessments, victim contacts, communication with probation officers, critical incident reports, release summaries. I have conducted many exercises with offenders from the CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) exercise booklets, which focuses on specific criminogenic needs the offenders have. For example, substance abuse, anger management, family/marital relations and more.

Graduated from Shaftesbury High School in 2000.

2000 to current.
