Cover Letter

For more than 20 years, I enjoyed a successful career in IT, including 15 years with Verizon as a senior software engineer. Seven years ago, I decided to leave the IT profession for reasons that boil down to choosing what was best for my family. First, Verizon announced that the responsibilities of my entire group would be outsourced in the near future. While my IT skills and subject matter expertise had seen me through many layoffs, I knew it was just a matter of time before it also happened to me.

Second, we had just adopted two young children, and my wife was offered a position with a company in Waco that would allow me to be with our kids and handle most of the parenting and household responsibilities. While doing that, I also leveraged my self-taught home improvement abilities to purchase and renovate several distressed properties, to rent or sell them. This proved to be a good use of my skills and a profitable business.

More recently, a promotion for my wife brought us to San Antonio (where we had wanted to be for many years), the Waco properties have been sold, and the kids are at an age that allows me to pursue a more traditional work week. I’ve found that I miss the challenges and rewards of working in IT and am very interested in returning to full time employment.

I believe my experience, abilities and values make me an excellent candidate for the position at Vision One Inc. While I realize that my being away from IT for seven years may be of concern, I am confident that my 27 years of solid experience in Mainframe development, along with my exceptional work ethic, will help me meet or exceed the expectations of management within a very short time. I am foremost a problem solver, and I do what it takes to get the job done well, and on schedule.

Thank you for taking the time to read my cover letter and review my resume. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss the position and how I can meet your company’s needs.
