Experienced Healthcare Manager with Strong Background in Human Resource Functions Earns MHRM

Dynamic, results oriented Respiratory Care Manager and Human Resource Professional with an extensive, background in regulatory compliance, recruiting and employee development, is ready to join a team who has quality, ingenuity and usefulness as top priorities.

My resume will reflect that I am a proven leader with the ability to manage multiple projects with on time and on budget completion. With expertise in quality assurance and process improvement from idea development through implementation, my team also performed follow-up studies. We conducted programs of evaluation and lead / facilitated groups as needed. Clearly written policies and procedures eliminated confusion and ensured that all employees were judged by the same criteria. With that said, it was agreed employee development was and will be the key to success.

Core Competencies

Project Management

Strategic Planning

Employee Relations

Quality Assurance

Process Improvement

Employee Training and Development

Healthy Employee Initiatives

Interpersonal Communications

Relevant Work History

ECM Landscaping (3.5 years)

Human Resource Generalist

Actively handled work visa and payroll documents for a group of 50+ employees. Interviewed seasonal help, performed annual reviews. Assisted in assigning new jobs as needed. A busy group who made many home owners and business alike proud of their exterior presentation was sold and no longer needed an HR expert.

McKeeport Hospital (8 years)

Supervisor, Respiratory Care Services

My Director and I managed the activities of 85 employees while recruiting and hiring highly qualified employees to enhance patient care delivery. I provided professional educational opportunities to all the members of the health care team including resident doctors, nursing services, respiratory therapists and even central supply. My manager trusted me with payroll, FMLA compliance and workers compensations claims. We helped staff through two rounds of union bids. Thankfully, all bids failed. I also participated with an interdisciplinary team to develop and implement a solid quality assurance / process improvement program which exceeded JCAHO and state regulation agency requirements. JCAHO and state agency audits were always a challenge, but the team conquered the audits with higher marks than anticipated. The team also supported front line staff through two rounds of layoffs. During this turbulent chapter for one of my employers I also co-chaired with Nursing Services three interdisciplinary re-engineering teams.

Wightman Skilled Nursing Center/ Commons at Squirrel Hill (2.5 years)

Director of Respiratory Care Services then Managed Care Coordinator

The Assistant Director of Nursing Services and I spearheaded quality / process improvement while bolstering experienced employee recruitment to prepare for the facility to gain JCAHO accreditation which was a major feather in our caps. Insurance reporting compliance improved as did the facilities’ net gain reimbursement percentages.

Tele-Tracking Technologies (2 years)

Project Manager, Respiratory Care Division

I worked directly with my assigned computer programmer to develop a product line for bedside patient care management. I personally performed Beta testing for the product at two hospitals. With front line caregivers’ direction I was able to develop an easy to use main page along with a truly helpful “help” menu. This was a home based position which was a new and rewarding experience for me.

Wake Med Hospital (7 years)

Primary Emergency Department Therapist

As an Emergency Department Project Team member I helped to develop protocols to speed the screening of incoming patients while facilitating productive communication between all team members. This enhanced positive patient outcomes and family relations through honesty with a caring attitude. Improved patient flow and decreased delays in care were all recognized by management and customers as assets. As my age progressed so did my aches and pains. Running from place to place was rapidly taking its toll on my body.

UNC Hospital (current employer for 4+ years)

Staff Therapist

As an adult and pediatric Respiratory Care Practitioner I have offered suggestions for improvement strategies to management with little follow through by management. I challenged that the posters and other data shared by management was quality assurance, not process improvement and that both are required by JCAHO. I have earned my Six Sigma Yellow Belt and soon will develop a team to gain a Purple Belt. Next I hope to follow up with my Blue Belt, which must be approved by management. Time will tell.

Personal Data

As an HR professional I know that you, as a possible employer, cannot ask for much information from my current employer. Let me freely offer you some tidbits about Carol M. Wharton, the person.

My “children” have paws and hooves. I have three cats who rule the house and one rescue thoroughbred horse that is leased out to a wonderful young lady.

My husband is a retired professional BMW client consultant who has turned into a professional house wife. He tries and fails to rule the house better our three feline kids.

I love, love, love to be outside gardening. I live to swap seeds and ideas.

I have been married to my wonderful husband for almost 10yrs. He is completely supportive of my change in careers and I love him dearly.

I look forward to wearing real clothes to work. Scrubs feel like pajamas.

My husband and I love to entertain. We serve our guests top notch food and spirits. If you leave our home hungry or thirsty it’s your own fault.

I can work from home effectively and would rather have a phone conversation than using texts or emails for communication .

I feel that HR should be accessible to employers and employees, not locked away in a building way across town and done at 4:59pm. I am available for important matters, perceived by anyone, during normal waking hours. If you would wait till tomorrow than so would I.
