SeatUp! 100% Lift Elderly Seat Assist Project for BE428: Device Design and Diagnostics

January 2017 - May 2017 (5 months)

Greater Boston Area

My team's objective was to design and build a fully functional prototype to aid the issue of senior mobility. From interviews with caregivers and elders we ascertained that a major issue that concerned seniors was needing assistance when going to the bathroom.

After brainstorming, CADing, and FMEA, we devised and manufactured the SeatUp!, a solution designed to help seniors be able to transition between sitting and standing on toilets and seats with 100% independence and 100% privacy.

The prototype features handles for balance and stable positioning, an easy press switch in the handles that activates lift or recline, and two 750 N linear actuators that provide 100% lift. Besides hinges and actuators, all other parts were machined using the bandsaw and NC Mill.
