Bertschi AG is headquartered in Duerrenaesch, Switzerland.

Project Management and commercial negotiation for the SABIC “PLF” project in Al Jubail and Yanbu in Saudi Arabia. A contract with an annual turnover of 20 million euro. Total annual throughput about 7 million tons. 2 sites with both a 100,000 pallet location storage yard, 10 Rail Mounted Gantry cranes and a 20,000 TEU container yard. 700 trucks outbound per day.

General management of the project team consisting of operational and IT specialists.

Master planning together with EPC contractor and customer. Project reporting and engagement mapping of the different parties.

IT systems (NAVIS and SAP) operational analysis, system blueprinting, system configuration, implementation and user acceptance tests. Implementation of Maintenance Management Modules.

Implementation of safety and quality systems (ISO 9001, SHEMS/OSHAS 18001, GMP, Responsible Care 14001).

Compounding project for a major petrochemical company in Singapore. Business development, project study, tender process, financial analysis. A contract with an annual turnover of 5 million euro.

Operational support to the start-up of the onsite bagging and warehousing operations at the Sasol plant in Sasolburg in South Africa.

Project discussions and logistics site design (silos, packaging and warehouse area) for the new polyamide plant of Evonik in Singapore. A contract with an annual turnover of 1.5 million euro.

Development in the Malaysian petrochemical industry, with focus on the Petronas and BASF expansion in Pengerang, Johor.

Various projects and project proposals for Nippon Shukubai and Sumitomo Seika plant (both SAP), Prime Polymers (PE) in Singapore. Contracts with an annual turnover potential of about 4 million euro each.

oStart-up of a packaging and logistics platform for a 3.5 million Tons Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP) Plant in Singapore (January 2009-September 2012).

Head of the project management team of 15 managers/engineers (direct reports), a staff of 450 people and preparing the production ramp-up from 900 K tons/annum to 3,500 K ton/annum. Full P/L responsibility. A contract with an annual turnover of 43 million euro.

The team is responsible for the process and change management of the production plants and distribution center. The scale of the industrial services operations is considered a first of its kind in the industry.

Project included the start-up of production platforms for 4 new polymerization plants, 17 high speed packaging lines, labor force of about 450 people, a 300,000 pallet locations warehouse, 3,000 TEU container yard, 200 trucks full time on the road and a barging terminal to PSA port.

Responsibilities include the following areas:

Human Resources:

Recruitment of the new, local management of 15 managers.

Set-up and improve the selection procedures, tests, questionnaires.

Defined staffing targets, salary policy and budgets.

Prepared for the staff mass recruitment. Liaise with the Economic Development Board to get grants.

Improved the employee appraisal system to become more objective and with clear targets and deliverables for each employee.

Implemented Structured On-The-Job training modules and matrixes, which include testing, evaluation, training of the trainers and certification system.

Creation of “Katoen Natie University”, first within the Group. A series of in-class trainings for managers and supervisors based on a detailed manual.


Restructuring of the technical and bagging department. Increased the productivity with 45%.

Set-up a system of continuous mini-audits and events recording to improve quality and productivity proactively on a daily basis.

Redefine the KPI measurement system and new visual operational dashboard to create awareness for continuous productivity improvements.

Conduct trials of technological innovations introduced during the project.


P/L responsibility. Turnover S$ 65 million per year.

Created a financial dashboard integrating both operational and financial data improving the insight of the cost per unit.

Introduced simplified P/L’s and analysis for the department managers to become more cost conscious, resulting in a more facts and figures approach to the operational events.


Defined financial targets and procurement strategies.

Supervised a procurement budget of S$8,880,000 (=5.5 million euro). Ended S$750,000 under budget.

Introduce a more professional tender process for project equipment (trucks, trailers, container cranes, outsourced cleaning services, packaging equipment, cars…).

Negotiate pricing and contractual conditions.

Follow-up of the financial performance of outsourced services.

Define clear performance KPI’s for all suppliers.


Replacement the existing Oracle based WMS with a new tailor made Navision based platform, using in-house developed technology. Analysis and implementation of a new Transport Management Module and Container Yard Management system.

Automate the maintenance, spare parts and procurement system to a paperless system allowing faster and easier tracking.

Job title: Head Specialty Chemicals

Company: Katoen Natie Services Ltd., Rayong, Thailand.

Job Scope: Start-up of the Specialty Chemicals business unit in Thailand:

General management of the specialty chemicals business and team, consisting of a senior operational manager, safety manager, administration manager and quality manager.

Business development with focus on offering new concepts and value added activities to Specialty Chemicals producers: (re-)packing, blending, sieving… of liquids and powders and developing new logistics platforms.

Key account management of customers.

Close follow-up and management of the specialty chemicals processes and value added activities, with focus on excellent quality and safety records (No lost time or recordable injury).

Implementation of continuous improvement systems by introducing internal and customer KPI Manuals, “Events” system (continuous non-conformity reporting) and “Mini-audit” system conducted by supervisors and managers on a daily basis.

Re-engineering of the employee incentive management scheme to integrate the Mini-audit and Events system and to create a system of continuous feedback and appraisals.

Procurement of liquids and powder handling equipment and infrastructure.

Budgeting and P/L responsibility for the specialty chemicals business in Thailand.

Achievements: In 2006, the Specialty Chemicals business was non existent in Thailand. In 2008, the specialty chemicals business unit in Thailand, consisted of a dedicated team of 23 people and reported an annual turnover of THB 95 million (=2.5 million euro), offering drumming, blending, shredding and warehousing activities. Interesting job because it involved selling and setting up new operational and logistics concepts (for the Thai market) which added real value to the customers.

Added Job Scope: Account Management Bayer MaterialScience

Preparation, analysis and negotiation of a 10 year, THB 2.4 billion (60 million euro) contract extension, the Katoen Natie Services Thailand “base contract”. Data analysis, cost calculations, target pricing, preparation of the proposals, indexation and negotiation of the contractual conditions.

Negotiations of the main framework contract, contractual addendums and additional activities.

Supervising and management of the account executives team and CSR’s.

Set-up weekly Action Meetings, to get things moving and to achieve a higher customer satisfaction.

Achievements: 10 year contract extension was signed, without major price reduction and before reaching the targeted date. Creating a win-win situation for both customer and Katoen Natie.

Added Job Scope: Leader Project Management Team

Start-up of the on-site operations at Bayer MaterialScience/Ineos Thailand, a 450 K per annum Polycarbonate Compounds, PC, ABS, SAN and BPA plant in Map ta Phut. Onsite handling of 320 K tons per annum.

Re-organizing the warehouse and packing set-up and the internal organization to optimize the product flows through the distribution platform and increase productivity of the packing operation (semi-automatic Newlong packing lines and manual palletizing) with 17.3% per year.

Identifying and optimize the operational bottlenecks, by reworking the incentive schemes and removing constraints.

Creation of the ‘Strengthen Safety Program’, a close co-operation between Katoen Natie’s and the customer’s safety teams. Today Katoen Natie has been operating the site for 4 years without LTI.

Achievements: Within 2 months, an operational and administrative team of 124 people was ready to take over the onsite packing and warehousing operations at Bayer MaterialScience. Since the take over, no downtime at the plant has been caused by the team.

Start-up of the on-site and off-site operations at Momentive Performance Materials, Thailand, a 45 K tons silicones plant.

Managing the transition from the previous service provider and re-organizing the SAP administrative workflow to eliminate stock reconciliation problems and avoid data input errors.

Project studies conducted:

PTT Polymer Logistics (PTTPL), logistics platform for the LDPE & LLDPE plants in Map ta Phut, 1,500K tons per annum. Drafting the operational master plan, scheduling the start-up of the packing and warehouse operations efficiently.

HMC, JV Basell-PTT, operational improvements for the on-site warehouse and silo farm for a 450K tons per annum PP plant.

Momentive Performance Materials, optimizing the drumming and warehousing flow for a 45K tons per annum silicones plant.
