Case study

●Working in a team of 2 other students, we conducted an economic analysis and local optimization of a proposed styrene production plant. Used engineering calculations and Excel solver to determine all stream properties of the facility. Sized and priced all equipment and utilities, and entered costs and revenues into an economic model created in Excel in order to determine the plant’s economic potential. Investigated the effects of changing various equipment parameters to determine the effect on the net present value. We then proposed a final optimized process design, created a process flow diagram for this design, and completed a Pro/II simulation of this process. My team raised the plant’s projected NPV from -$283 M to $34 M, in addition to proposing many necessary process and chemical safety implementations for the plant.
