To Whom It May Concern,

Jane Voth, who has taught science at Concord High School for the last 37 years, has asked that I write a letter of recommendation upon her retirement at the end of this school year. I'm happy to write that letter; I'm considerably less happy that Jane is leaving Concord High. Objectively, I'd be suspect of the continued productivity of anyone who had spent this many years I at the same school. Jane puts the lie to that assumption. She teaches biology to seniors and freshmen and, while I wasn't here 37 years ago, it's difficult to envision that she taught with more passion, enthusiasm and commitment then than she does now. There are three sections of her senior Advanced Placement Biology class so as to accommodate the number of seniors who want to take it. The rigor, engagement and excitement around this course are legendary. I witnessed a presentation to our school board last year by four of these students, who described the sophisticated individual projects each was undertaking, projects they were pursuing under Jane's guidance during after-school hours. This work was in addition to the students' (and Jane's) normal workload.

Simply stated, Jane Voth is an exceptional individual and teacher: talented, dynamic, and deeply committed to the success of her students. If she chooses to teach part-time following her retirement, she would, as noted, prove exceptional; I she has lost nothing off her fastball. If she seeks employment in another field, hire her; her capacity for achievement and productivity is undiminished.
