Scientific Glassblower
1973 to June 2010 Corning Incorporated, Corning, NY
I retired from Corning Incorporated after 37 years of service. My role for the past 32 years was scientific glassblower. This involved using hand skills and a glass lath with natural gas and hydrogen and oxygen to assemble various apparatus. I am skilled at making glass apparatus from complex drawings with tight tolerances.
I ran the lampshop at the Sullivan Park Research and Development Facility which included making and repairing boracillic, quartz, soda lime and some exotic glass apparatus used in ongoing fiber optics experiments as well working directly with the scientists, engineers and technicians to design apparatus to be used in experiments. My responsibilities also included ordering materials and equipment as needed for projects and tracking inventory using People Soft in Corning’s procurement system. I also used E-Tab and E-Tad software to charge out time and materials.
I was honored to aid in the restoration of the 1938 Lindbergh-Carrel Perfusion Pump for Harvard University.
My previous positions in my first 7 years at Corning included hourly laborer, cleaner, hand tooler, machine operator, glass grinder, packer and fork truck driver.

1995-2003 Neon Designs, Signs & Labels, Horseheads, NY
I set up a neon plant in my home to design and manufacture neon signs from start to finish. I installed and repaired signs with the aid of a 42 foot bucket truck. I designed and cut vinyl letters in house using Sign Lab and Coral Draw as well as Vinyl Master Pro Software. I used Microsoft Word, Excel and QuickBooks software for billing and tracking sales and costs as well as sales tax tracking and payment.

I started an excavating business after completing a Heavy Equipment Operator class through the BOCES Adult Education program. I serviced and maintained all of my equipment including a dump truck and bulldozer.
I built a three bedroom ranch log home in 1980. I cleared land with the use of a chain saw and bulldozer, built a large pond, installed septic system, shingled roof, did electrical wiring, plumbing and installed a coal and propane boilers. I have also installed veneer brick, concrete floors and built pole barns and wood decks. I am a self-taught stick and MIG welder.
