An outline of an Ignatian exercise

*.Prepare the prayer by choosing a place, time theme (grace to be prayed for) scripture or guided imagery, and make sure all your materials are at the ready using bookmarks, journal, Bible passage, or guided imagery text. Review your last prayer time.

2.read the material to be prayed over (the night before if your prayer is in the morning).

3.Begin standing with the Our Father.

4.Seated center yourself.

5.Invite the Holy Spirit to be your guide and protector.

6.Read the material again, slowly and stop as the Spirit amplifies or points out a portion for your meditation.

7.Try to imagine, feel, hear or incarnate the story in your mind’s theater, placing yourself into the picture in one or more of the roles (but one at a time).

8.Stop and listen to God, to your emotions and thoughts (especially strong ones—volcanoes and black holes).

9.Let distractions go through you, don’t even pay them any mind.

10.Listen for the Peace.

11.Dialog with God about the grace you wish to receive—to Know the love God has for you.

12.Reflect on the dialog, perhaps even writing it down in your journal.

13.Evaluate what worked, didn’t work and make note.

14.Recall and record insights, feelings and the whole process.

How to pray a colloquy:

1.Read over your dialog or journaling, from the prior prayer or days of prayer or other assigned material for the colloquy.

2.Dialog in your imagination with Jesus’ Mother. Ask her if she has anything new to tell you, and write down what you imagine She would say, if anything.

3.Dialogue with the Holy Spirit. Sit and listen. Write what you imagine He would say.

4.End with a Hail Mary and a Glory Be.
