TRAINING THE LEADERS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SEMINARS
Southeast Asia
For two years Studio Urban Design worked collaboratively in partnership with Blue Track Centre Singapore and under contract from the Singapore Minister of Foreign Affairs. The objective to bring our extensive global experience in contemporary urban and environmental issues to the leaders of various public functions within the governments of Southeast Asia. We began by scripting a general five-day seminar programme that covered a wide variety of influential issues affecting future community development across the globe:
• Inclusive economic opportunity
• Mobility and technological enhancements
• Preservation and heritage responsibility
• Ecological networks and green cities
• Energy Management and reduction of greenhouse effects
• Smart systems and resilient infrastructure
• Public services and enhanced quality of life
After three days of presentations and lectures, the fourth day was oriented to reviewing the week’s learning and we asked the twenty or so management level representatives to engage by assembling into five mixed groups to create a series of different teams with different perspectives. The assignment: tackling selective issues from the programme as it relates to the city. The final day ramped the spirit of the seminar programme up and focused on exploring solutions for the host city. The team was to present and express their ideas collectively as a potential new vision to direct the city’s development executives in a more responsible and strategic way based on the analysis they prepared the day before. It was the first time, in a few cases, that the various city authorities had ever worked together - this was the best takeaway from the entire effort. Each host city programme was suggested to meet more specific challenges relevant to the placemaking, making the programme more effective:
EDUCATION IS THE NEXT STEP TOWARD A RESILIENT FUTURE As we mature, it is a benefit to our peers and those who will establish their own career path by sharing knowledge, experience and technical skills in a way that inspires.
