Jeff Talcott – Korana Stepetic

Overview of Responsibilities:

. Communicate with submitting clients about proper sample submission and information about testing

· Open, sort, identify and process diagnostic specimens

· Communicate and coordinate changes with submitting veterinarians regarding sample submissions

· Accession, split samples and deliver to testing labs

. Process and ship referrals to other labs for testing

. Maintain shipping certificates for DOT and IATA

. Maintain receiving certificates for lab safety/awareness

Job Characteristics, Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Under minimal guidance, receive diagnostic specimens via UPS, Fed Ex, USPS, clinicians, students, interns, and local submitting professionals. Open, sort, identify and label high volumes of diagnostic specimens which may include hazardous materials such as dry ice and formalin. Frequent splitting of samples is required by hand or pipette to meet testing needs and other samples often require spinning down in centrifuge for separation of plasma or serum. Data entry (accessioning) of all submissions is necessary to create a record of owners name, veterinary profile, animal profile (breed, sex, age, species), identification of sample submitted and test requests. After information is recorded electronically, accession number(s) are generated onto labels which will be attached to corresponding paperwork and samples which are then delivered to appropriate testing labs to begin testing process. Working in a fast paced, team oriented setting, the ability to prioritize and record submissions with acute accuracy is essential to meeting courier and lab testing schedule demands. Routinely manage multiple tasks simultaneously with accuracy and frequent interruptions. Frequent communication with doctors, clinicians, students, interns and the general public providing accurate information on sample submission requirements, testing schedules and fees as well as providing general information on testing, referrals and shipping requirements. Maintaining confidentiality of account information is always a requirement. Missing or incomplete information on existing samples submissions involves contacting veterinarians, clinicians or laboratories to clarify or provide information necessary to proceed with testing. Concentration and close attention to details are key characteristics I associate with this position.
