Currently assigned to the NOAA Ship Fairweather S-220. Conducting ocean mapping and survey operations. I work in Deck Dept. both as a watch stander and day worker. Specific accomplishments are;
● Underway as a qualified helmsman I receive and execute all orders to the helm, continuously steering a steady and safe course while using and understanding navigational terms.
● Underway as a lookout I continuously scan the surface reporting all ship traffic, hazards to navigation, and all navigational aids to the officer of the deck (OOD).
● In port and at sea I stand sound and security watches conducting tours throughout the ship noting all safety discrepancies correcting and reporting all deficiencies to the OOD. Monitor all operating equipment noting any malfunctions and reporting them.
● In port stand gangway watches. Greeting and challenging all crew members, guest and visitors arriving on board. Maintain visitors log and Deck logs.
● As a day worker assigned to boat crews. For launch and recovery of survey boats, AMBAR, Fast Rescue Boats, and RHIB
● Work on Cargo teams assisting crane operators and as a rigger, load and unload cargo equipment and stores.
● Operating pneumatic and electrical power tools. Chipping, grinding, and sanding preparing metal, non- metallic and wood surfaces for priming and painting. Apply epoxy oil base paints varnishes and lacquers to prepare surface.
● I work in the paint locker mixing and issuing paints solvents and cleansers. I receive and properly dispose of all paint waste, chips and debris, and used paint brushes and rollers, in accordance with all standing directives.
● While underway and in port, assigned to assist the 3rd mate Damage Control Officer (DCO) in maintaining Safety equipment, Damage control equipment, and other lifesaving equipment such as fall protection gear as a competent person.
● On Watch during the weekends we took soundings of all the ships void spaces, tanks, and other areas of concern.
● As a Watch stander I maintained a proper look out, security round, and wheel watch executing all rudder orders and communicating with the watch Officer utilizing navigational terms relating to the ships heading and steering while maintaining a steady course.
● I have also been assigned to NOAA fishing vessels where I was a fisherman. I prepped, stowed, and lay out nets. I also made repairs to the nets. We fished numerous areas on the map searching for quantity and different marine life. We worked closely with research scientist to help have a better understanding of what's out there and how much, searched for new species and growth. Education
