Adjunct Instructor- Ellsworth Community College- Designed and taught course titled African American History 257. Course covered African American history from the late seventeenth century to present. This course was normally at maximum enrollment capacity of thirty students and involved a high degree of classroom management strategies. This course wasn't previously taught at Ellsworth and had to be implemented in conjunction with the regent schools Iowa and Iowa State and UNI to meet transfer requirements.

COMMUNICATION
• In working in the above position at Ellsworth Community College I have used effective communication in managing my interpersonal relationships with students. In my capacity as an educator for the past ten years I have found that effective communication must be present in being successful working with students in the classroom setting and in the gym setting.
• At Ellsworth we were fortunate in that we had a very diverse group of students on campus. This gave me the opportunity to communicate with students from a broad spectrum of backgrounds. The experience that I've gained has contributed to my ability to "get to know" students and to take individual differences into account in my approach to communication. LEADERSHIP
• In 1987 I was hired as a young coach at a very small High School located in Omaha Nebraska. As a young assistant I was introduced to a program that had not won a basketball game for eight years! Immediately I could sense the reason for the losing streak .the team wasn't being coached or led in any particular way. I quickly learned what leadership wasn't and set out to lead in my own style. After one season the coach moved on and I was promoted to the head position. Over the next five years I had to "learn" how to lead. Leadership entails so many aspects that it has to be constantly refined.
• The leader must show traits such as fairness and compassion in dealing with the group and also be able to maintain discipline. The real challenge that I have found in both the classroom and on the court is being able to get the group to lead themselves. If students buy into taking responsibility for leading each other, the leader's job becomes much easier.
• In 1991 the above mentioned team, Nebraska School for the Deaf finished 17-3 and entered the Nebraska state district D-2 class as the number one seeded team. The team received several individual national honors including myself as Silent News' 1990 National Deaf Coach of the Year.
