Elevator Mechanic, 09/2013 - Current
Otis Elevator Company – Sioux City, IA
First three plus years in union were in Construction. About 5 years as State Coordinator and State testing. I also run a repair route and maintenance. Im currently suspended because I fell asleep driving an hour plus morning drive in South Dakota and they are trying me in court because Im on medication from the Veterans Affairs hospital. It's a non narcotic drug they're charging me with but South Dakota has a zero tolerance prescription drug driving policy. I'm still employed by Otis but currently suspended until the case is over. If the pay is similar Ive been thinking of leaving the elevator union since I moved here anyways. A lot of people quit out here even though it's one of the best unions but in this local it's a mess. Local 8 in Northern California was great. I moved here to be closer to my daughter and Ive been unhappy with the local out here and how it's ran since moving here. There's a lot of nepotism here so it's not going to change out here I don't believe. Also the economy out here cannot supply enough manpower for our Local. Apparently it's been a mess out here for a long time. Lots of traveling and overtime. I'm looking for a regular 40 hr job at one or maybe two locations with less mandatory overtime. I'm willing to consider the pay cuts and even the loss of the 10 years invested in my pension.
