JEFFERSON PARISH CORRECTION CENTER – GRETNA, LA

As a Correctional Officer my responsibilities were to ensure the care, custody and control of the inmates were carried out daily while the inmates incarcerated awaited trial on remand or who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in the facility. My duties were to monitor inmates for unusual behavior, improper conduct, or signs of conflict, and to diffuse disruptive behaviors of inmates by verbal order or appropriate use of physical force. Put in place the communication skills to detect inmate issues such as suicide risk, drug usage, etc. The practice of safety to ensure the proper safety measures are performed are to ensure the inmates are properly secured whether in their cells or while being hand cuffed while in transport. Performing safety searches to all areas of the facility to ensure there are no security breaches or contraband in the inmate cells and living areas, showers, and day room areas. Conducting Strip searches of inmate trustees once leaving the kitchen area or tool room before transitioning back to the dorms for lock up. Safety precautions were conducted by ensuring a proper visual head count of all inmates before and at the end of the shift to confirm a proper head count, sometimes after a temporary lock down. Making sure inmates are in their assigned cells. Respond to all emergency situations in the facility such as medical issues or fires. Write narrative reports describing all events that may have occurred during my watch, disciplinary reports, etc. Read short notes from prior two shifts, as well writing short notes into logbooks to communicate important information between shifts. Safety practices also include the opening and closing of all cell gates or doors to restricted areas that allow staff to enter or exit. Use of portable two-way radio to communicate to other officers and staff members. Adhere to all mandatory activations during hurricanes, storms, or any emergency that may arise. Juvenile Detention Counselor – July 2019 to May 2021 JUVENILE JUSTICE INTERVENTION CENTER – CITY OF NEW ORLEANS In this position I am responsible for ensuring the safety and direct supervision of juvenile offenders in the detention center. Providing safety, security, and transportation of the offenders in a Structured environment. Performing intake interviews, searching the inmate once entering the booking area, transporting and ensuring the proper safety precautions of the proper procedures and Correct lock down of restraints, hand cuffs, and leg shackles prior to transporting a juvenile to court, or escorting the youth to medical, criminal justice courts, social services, or any in the judicial facility the youth may need to be escorted. My position also included but were not limited to the proper safety checks and patrols throughout the facility to ensure the well being of all youth incarcerated in the facility.
