Pipeline Inspection Co. Ltd., Houston, Tx, 1998 – 2002

A fifty-year-old firm engaged in the manufacture of devices that test for defects in the coating applied to pipe, tanks or any conductive substrate. These devices are known as Holiday Detectors. Approximately ten years ago they added a product line that tracks and can pinpoint the location of a pipeline pig as it moves through a pipeline. This firm is extremely sensitive to the Pipeline Construction cycle and must be resilient enough to endure extremely active manufacturing years ($3.9 million) and then construction sales slumps ($2.4 million) without significant changes in personnel or significant shortages or overages in inventory levels. This company is privately held. Markets covered are Oil and Gas Pipelines, Water Distribution, Petrochemical and General Industrial Markets.

Managed all functions: Marketing and Sales, Manufacturing, Engineering, Information Technology, Advertising, Purchasing, Inventory Control, Accounting. Quality Control, Customer Service, Safety, Training.

Implemented the first companywide Enterprise Resource Planning system software (Syteline), bringing together all functional areas on the same software.

Reduced permanent manufacturing personnel level thirty percent, by restructuring and re-analyzing the manufacturing process, improving overall profitability while improving the gross margin.

Added an additional Engineer to increase overall skill level and to allow development and introduction of new products while increasing computer skills and digital capabilities. At this time the company is in the development stage for a re-engineered portable Holiday Detector, as well as second detector, a new portable pig tracker electronics unit, a new stationary pig tracker, and concepts for new pig tracker transmitters.

Restructured the purchasing system to make better use of the Supply Chain where possible to avoid inventory shortfalls and overages as well as to reduce cost.

Implemented a broader based marketing program that kept the best of the old domestic focused program while increasing the focus on attempting to take advantage of new opportunities internationally. Increased the advertising spend in magazines and trade shows while maintaining our aggressive conference attendance program. Achieved the CE mark for our products to enable their sales in Europe. Implemented the first Company website which improved international access to brochures and other information as well as decreased mailing costs.

Conducted Safety, Quality and Systems training for all personnel.

Worked with all departments to develop and implement the first company budgets to provide management tools for departmental evaluation. I also developed “ 6 Key Indicators” for my review.

Operations Manager

Peek Measurement Inc., Houston, Tx 1990 - 1998

Peek Measurement Inc. was a wholly owned subsidiary of Peek PLC a London based firm that has subsequently been acquired by Thermo Electron. Peek Measurement Inc. was the worldwide measurement division of Peek Plc and consisted of companies formerly known as Polysonics, Brand Instruments and Sarasota Automation. The Houston Facility manufactured three ultrasonic devices (Doppler flow meters, Time of Flight flow meters, Open Channel flow meters,) Impeller flow meters, and Specific Gravity analyzers. The Houston Facility produced around $10 million in sales. Markets covered are Water and Wastewater, Ultra Pure Water, Petrochemical, Chemical, HVAC, Irrigation, and General Industrial.

Implemented an ISO 9001 Quality Control System.

Reduced overall delivery time from 4 to 6 weeks to 7 working days by instituting a modified KAN BAN based inventory system, which also increased inventory turns from 3 turns per year to over 6 turns.

Restructured the manufacturing process and reduced overall shop personnel by nineteen percent.

Implemented first companywide Management Information System (MACOLA).

Developed a highly cohesive team by locating my office on the production floor and having a high degree of interaction with the shop personnel.

Maintained Inventory accuracy of approximately 2%. Supervised the build out and construction of a 29,000 square foot build out to move the 4 separate facilities of the Polysonics era into a new single facility including a modern Anti-Static Electronics Manufacturing area. Relocated the entire facility across town with only a 2-day downtime

Flow Research Corporation a Division of

Peek Measurement, Houston, TX 1987-1990

Flow Research Division of Peek Measurement manufactured a line of insertion impeller flow meters. This product line was intended to offer a lower cost solution to the Doppler flow meters being offered by the Polysonics side of the company. Markets covered were HVAC, Irrigation, Water, and General Industry. Overall sales of the unit in 1987 were approximately $700,000 and increased to over $1,000,00 by the time of my departure with a fifteen percent Return on Sales. Peek Measurement Inc. acquired Polysonics in 1988.

Responsible for P/L of the division.

Managed all functional areas

Developed Ads, Selected Media Space, Trade shows

I hired and fired inside sales personnel as well as independent Sales Representatives.

Selected outside electronics to extend the life of the product as inside engineering efforts were being spent on Polysonics products

Increased sales during this period against stiff competition from Signet Scientific and Data Industrial.

National Sales Manager

Flow Research Corporation a Division of

Polysonics Inc., Houston, TX 1984 to 1987

Polysonics acquired Flow Research Corporation from a Florida firm as a “garage shop” operation in 1984. No technical information was available (i.e.; development of the “K” factor for the flow meter. No representative network was up and running. Advertising was non-existent and no sales information was available. Sales the year previous to acquisition were approximately $250,000.

Increased to $700,000 by 1984 despite stiff competition from the market leaders Signet and Data Industrial.

Located and developed over 30 representative firms in the United States and approximately 15 agents overseas all broken out by market segments and geographic territories.

Created the first sales brochures and advertisements.

Contract Administrator

W-K-M Division of Cooper Industries, Houston, TX 1980 to 1984

W-K-M was a pre-eminent manufacturer of high quality oilfield and pipeline gate valves, safety systems, plug valves, quarter turn valves, and wellhead systems and actuators. This division in 1980 was part of ACF Industries and was sold to Joy Manufacturing in approximately 1982. In 1984 Cooper Industries acquired it. I include my time here on my resume due to the technical and mechanical nature of this job. I began my career there as an inside sales correspondent. I moved up first to Market Service Representative and then to Applications Engineer. I finished my Career there as Contract administrator.

Underwent training on quarter turn, slab gate, mechanical seal gates, and butterfly and plug valves. I also underwent training on pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric actuator systems. I received intensive training in corrosion, trims, and material compatibilities. I also became the in house sales expert on sub sea block valves.

I was responsible for sales order entry, sales assistance, sizing of actuators and coordination with in plant and external plant production planning. I was saved by management through eleven layoffs before I left in 1984.
