A little over 10 years ago on September 27, 2013 I was driving in South Austin when I was stopped by the police and arrested for my sixth DWI. I was an alcoholic. I could not make it a day without drinking it's all that I thought about! I would go into a pawn shop and pawn something (usually not mine) then I would go to the store and buy a 12 pack of beer, a pack of cigarettes and barely enough gas to make it back. I would get back in my car and look at my dirty unshaven, unmade self in the mirror and cry and cuss myself for not being able to stop doing it! Until my car was repoed. Then I had to walk or borrow. I lived in a camper at a storage facility. I didn't have electricity or water. I would play the drums in the country bands in the bars and get drunk. I would sit out under a street light at night with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other with a One Year Bible on my lap and read and pray. I was tired but couldn't stop. I never had any lasting relationships, even my family had given up hope on me. I was hopeless! The night that I was arrested 10 years ago I came to the end of myself and surrendered to Jesus. Not only could I not stay sober but I did not know how to live a successful life. I didn't know how to live. I tried AA. But that was boring! What a horrible life that was going to be and it was to be for the rest of my life if I wanted to stay sober! Yuck! Everyone always said I needed to be good! I couldn't! I kept ending up in the same place. This was my third time going to prison. Jesus came into my heart and life that night when I surrendered and it was my life's turning point! George Strait has a song called I found Jesus on the Jailhouse floor! I found Him there too! It was my last drink of alcohol and my last cigarette and my life changed directions! I did go to AA for a little while to get a paper signed for parole. But I started noticing that what they said and what was inside of me was different. Jesus had set me free. Today I am free indeed! Today I have the most awesome life! Today I have an awesome relationship with my daughter after I had missed most of her life to drink. I have a granddaughter who has never seen me drink or smoke. I have a Christian wife who has never seen me drink or smoke. I live in a nice home. I have a nice vehicle. I graduated from two year Bible college at Life Christian Bible Institute with an associate degree in Christian counseling! I play the drums in a traveling southern gospel music ministry called Restored. www.restoredministriesok.org We were awarded GMAA trio of the year and BGSSA first runner up group of the year. We have a song called Canaan on the other side made it to #2 on the top 100 song list. I get to share my testimony in churches all over. And on the radio and TV in states I've never been to. I am not perfect but my Jesus is perfect! Jesus is doing for me what I could not do for myself before! God is good and Sober life is awesome! I used to think that the bars were fun. And when I didn't drink, everyone was having more fun than me. Today I don't believe that! I have learned to have church fun. I look forward to Wednesday and Sunday when I can be at church with friends or on the road meeting new friends. There is always a church somewhere having something fun or celebrating something. I wouldn't trade my life today for the old one for nothing! Now I feel like there is more! I want to have a part time job and work somewhere where I can help others find the kind of awesome life that I have found in Jesus Christ. I want to be a light and give hope. I am living proof that a new life is possible! I am not sure where that will be but my God is faithful! Thank you for hearing what Jesus did for me!
