Weights and Research was creating and finding revenue for the company. Monthly goals were set at the beginning of the month. Goal was met 9 out of 11 months.
I did not make goal in June or July by this time the company was struggling to keep business. Overall my 9 months of being W & R revenue for Yellow was well over $ 600,000.00 the short time I was there.
It required me to be on the dock and look at inbound city freight to measure, check bill of lading for class Verification. Meaning checking NMFC number by opening up freight to check product and compare to check type of freight matched what was on bill of lading. If there was a discrepancy it was my job to measure skid’s and take pictures of the freight and packing slip or bill of lading and correct it in the system . This is how revenue was generated.
I also looked for shipment’s that had multiple skid’s for a cubic capacity . This was to check for how much room floor space was being used in a trailer.
With the cooperation of dockhand's it was very much appreciated. At the highest volume of day everybody had to be aware of freight needing to be looked at. If freight came in that needed my attention or was new freight it was put on the dock so that I may get a look at it to see if it was properly billed and moving under correct class, weight and description. This position required city door’s to be set up for appointment freight for delivery. Certain driver’s had specific scheduled run’s they made daily and specific start times. Making sure all appointment freight due that day was put out for delivery. Putting out any freight that did not require appointments for efficient delivery. Being a hub supervisor it is very important you know your schedules. Dock staff need to be on their toes as well as supervisors. Trailers have to be set up in the AS400 system for freight to be loaded. Freight to be loaded and strapped in for traveling. Hot freight to be on the tail so that the next terminal can get to it and put it out for delivery. I personally checked my bill count against what AS400 to verify my bill count matched. This prevented my trailer’s from being delayed on closing and getting the driver out on time. Fully loaded trailers for maximum revenue.

Lined up drivers for schedule cut times.
Schedule drivers pulled service freight, time critical freight, proper freight made sure all next day freight moved to final destination without fail.
Monitored dispatch board and adjusted call priorities regularly based on caller needs. Scheduled loads according to priority and available equipment. Supervised driver dispatching, route planning and vehicle tracking for over 60 schedules per night and more Reported delays, accidents or other traffic and transportation situations. The job of a dispatcher is to move all service due freight on scheduled driver’s first then 2 day service freight on extra board drivers.
My personal policy was no driver left the terminal unless they pulled freight if at all possible. The point of dispatch is to move as much freight as possible and with efficiency. Manifest Clerk / Dispatch

Manifest clerks job is to close loads off the dock, bill count had to be accurate. It had to match what was showing in the system. If you had more bills than what was showing in the AS 400 the closing supervisor had to be contacted to make sure the freight was not sitting on the dock . Supervisor would verify freight was loaded and bill’s could be added.
At this time checking for hazmat freight making sure it was billed correctly if not then any corrections were made at this time including billing it correctly. Pulling hazmat endorsement so the driver is aware that he or she has hazardous materials that may or may not need placards. If not marked on Manifest and the hazmat product was over a 1001 pounds again the supervisor was contacted on the dock asked to come to the office to mark manifest where the hazmat freight was in the trailer. This was per company policy . Our driver’s needed to know where in the trailer the hazmat freight was in case of an accident or possible spill inside of the trailer. Lining up driver’s at halfway meets : Cover Dispatcher when they took a break or were overwhelmed at the dispatch window.
