Specialized in the settings application & logic programming of SEL 700G, SEL300G, SEL 400G & 487E relays on the TVA fleets of 100 MW gas-turbine generators & GSU XFMRs (Colbert & Gallatin PS). Generators are connected to 3-winding GSU XFMRs via a generator voltage circuit breaker. There were twelve generators and six GSU XFMRs. Applied SEL 710 motor protection relays on 4 kV gas-turbine “Cranky Motors”, 387E/ 751 relays on internal power system XFMRs & high-speed supply changeover scheme on a 2-out-of 3 breaker basis.

MOTT MACDONALD, WESTWOOD, MA (2007-2012)

Principal Engineer

Produced detailed designs of engineering schemes for power generation and transmission system protections, local & remote monitoring, alarms, and SCADA interfacing for overseas gas turbine plant (Kuwait) and 230 kV-system connected wind farm (WF) generator substations in Upstate New York, US. As a technical utility client, provided over two hundred relay settings files for various utility class 115-kV and 345-kV transmission systems and substations owned and operated by National Grid (NG) & NSTAR (New England). The workload undertaken for NG was large by both component count and dollar value.

Projects include:

Kent County, RI 345-kV & Drumrock 115 -kV Transmission Protection Upgrades (2008-2011)

Applied relaying protection upgrades for various 345-kV and 115-kV transmission lines transformers, capacitors & and busbars at these major bulk power substations.

•PCM schemes were applied with full hardware configuration for:

-345 kV lines with SEL 421 (sub-cycle) on POT & Alstom P433 (sub-cycle) on DCB pilots -115 kV lines with SEL 421 / SEL 311L & Erlphase L-PRO

-345 kV/115 kV Busbars with SEL 487B & Erlphase B-PRO

-345 kV/115 kV Transformers with SEL 387 & Erlphase T-PRO -115 kV Capacitors with SEL 351 & Cooper iCP 640

•About 140 settings files were produced for two substations for redundant main protections, backup O/C, auto-reclosing, breaker fail scheme and so on.

•Other substations in NG included Bridge Water, East Main Street & Comeford substations.

Waltham 345 kV Substation-NSTAR (2011-2012)

Designed protection and control schemes for 345 kV lines, busbars & transformers employing SEL 421, Alstom P443, ABB REB 670, SEL 387 and ABB RET relays.

Noble Ryan Wind Farm Substation–New York (2008)

Responsibilities in the WF project included detailed engineering design, relay and metering one-line /three-line diagrams, relay settings for transmission grids, interconnection transformers and substation busbars and collector feeders, etc.

Ministry of Electricity & Water, Kuwait - 275 kV Sabiya Gas Turbine Peaking Power Station (2007-2008)

Responsible for the PCM scheme protecting redundant 275 kV generator busbars with the switch-on plant items, like GSU & transmission system transformers, cable feeders & one-and –a –half bus layout.
