DATA OFFICER

Leicester City Council Leicester, UK MARCH 2022 – AUGUST 2023

Creating reports using SQL Server Reporting Services for the Education department. Creating complex SQL queries as required to extract data from the database. Developed an ETL process to analyze funding returns along with other data. Created a custom ticketing system to keep track of tasks. Worked on releasing the data as part of an Open Data process using Swagger/OpenAPI.

I wrote Python scripts to connect the ebs database API with the Google Workspace API. Also wrote shell scripts to help administrators add learners to classes in bulk. As part of this I also had responsibility for server administration.

Passed DP-900 Azure Data Fundamentals and DP-300 Azure Database Administrator Associate.

Research on rural gentrification. Leading tutorials on an undergraduate ‘Introduction to Geography’ module. Used GIS technology to produce reports on rural land use to inform research findings.

Modules on research design, methodology, and statistics. Trained to use IBM’s SPSS statistical analysis software, and its open source counterpart JASP. My final dissertation was a historical study of the Prestwold estate near Loughborough, titled ‘Gentlemen, gentrification, and land-ownership in Leicestershire’.

CAMPAIGN FELLOW

New Zealand Labour Party Auckland, NZ MAY 2017 – AUGUST 2018

Worked with Deborah Russell, then candidate for New Lynn in the 2017 general election. For a period I took on the leadership of the electorate campaign team Managing schedules of volunteers, organizing door-knocking and phone-banking sessions. Russell won the seat, and the party won the election nationally, forming a government in September 2017.

MA GEOPOLITICS AND GRAND STRATEGY STUDENT

Sussex University Briton, UK SEPT 2015 – MAY 2017

Studied realist theories of International Relations, with a particular focus on critical approaches from Peter Gowan and Kees van der Pijl. My final thesis was on ‘Warlords and Revolutionaries in Xinjiang’ – an analysis of Sheng Schicai’s government in northwestern China in the 1930s-40s.

CAMPAIGNS ASSISTANT

We Own It Oxford, UK JANUARY 2015 – SEPTEMBER 2015

My task was to engage with parliamentary candidates in the run up to the 2015 general election. The goal was to commit them to reforming public outsourcing policy once elected to the House of Commons. Wrote letters, met with stakeholders. Carried out research on public services. At the end of the campaign we had 73 newly-elected MPs signed up to support a Public Service Users Bill.

ELECTIONS COORDINATOR

Green Party Oxford, UK JANUARY 2015 – JULY 2015

Responsible for Larry Sanders’ parliamentary campaign in Oxford West & Abingdon. – Managed campaign spending and accounts. Designed and printed promotional material using Adobe InDesign and a risograph printer. – Organised public events, including facilitating volunteer activities. I also undertook all administrative duties required by the local authorities in my role as the nominated election agent.

BROADCAST JOURNALIST/EDITOR

RT Ruptly Berlin, Germany MAY 2014 – DECEMBER 2014

Edited video footage from stringers down to packages of 1–2 minutes long. For each package I researched the story behind the footage and wrote short, factual scripts accompanied by detailed shotlists. On a few occasions I went out to film events or relieve other staff covering live situations. I also helped with planning for events in France.

PROJECTS, PUBLISHED WORK AND OTHER ITEMS

•Created the nth package for Typst, a Rust-based typesetting system. September 2023.

•Created an automatic deployment process for my personal website using AWS Codepipeline + Codecommit in April 2023. Rewrote again in August 2023 to use Github with a webhook listener on a custom build server.

•Wrote a Unicode proposal for the Universal Feed Symbol. 10th Nov. 2022.

•Wrote a Lambda function to automatically generate graphs of Cloudfront logs, using Python’s Matplotlib library. 9th Sept. 2022.

•Created a web app (leicester.bike) which showed the nearest rental bike station in Leicester and number of bikes available. 26th July 2022. Later wrote a Lambda function to automatically collect station usage data from the Leicester City Council Open Data API. Both services deployed on AWS. Now defunct as the rental bike service closed.

•Mapped all public toilets in Leicester, based on Freedom of Information requests. All toilets displayed on an online map using leaflet.js and OpenStreetMap. 12th December 2020.

•Won the OpenClipArt SVG drawing contest with a drawing of a desert island. 17th Nov 2020.

•Wrote a twitter bot (@star fronts) which tweeted out an image of the front page of the Morning Star newspaper every day, using the node.js tweeter library. 3rd May 2020.

•Built a PirateBox for offline communication and file sharing. Sept. 2013, and again in Oct. 2013.

•Assisted with video editing and production of a feature-length documentary called Taking on Tarmageddon, about resistance to Tar Sands development from Canada’s indigenous communities. Campbell Road Productions. 4th May 2012.
