Fire Career 1982 - 2013
Baltimore County Fire Department Towson, Maryland
I started as a volunteer firefighter with North Point-Edgemere Volunteer Fire Company. While here I decided to pursue my love of helping the community while serving a purpose. As I was still in high school, I had to juggle my class workload, while training, in addition to completing my Eagle Scout Rank in the Boy Scouts of America. (Which I am proud to say all 3 of my boys became Eagle Scouts too). When I began, I performed station duties such as training safely for all types of emergencies including medical runs as I was a certified Paramedic. Once I was accepted and graduated from the Fire Academy my responsibilities were similar but now, I had to put my experience to work. Five years later I was promoted to Fire Specialist. My responsibilities now included conducting training programs, additional administrative duties, made mercantile inspections, enforce violations when found and presented Public Fire Safety Awareness programs. Seven years later I was promoted to Lieutenant with more responsibilities including management, planning, and organizing needed supplies and equipment for the station. Along the way, I completed and was certified at several schools relating to Fire Safety and Rescue Training while teaching at our Fire/Rescue Academy, Harford County (MD) Fire School, and HACC sponsored trainings held in Penn Township, York Co, PA. All in anticipation of becoming a Fire Captain. In 1999 I tested for and was promoted to Fire Captain. My duties now included instructing and maintaining safety practices, not only for the personnel assigned to my shift, but also on both major and minor emergency scenes. handling personnel issues and recommendations and addressing any public complaints and questions. I also had to use my material and scheduling aptitudes to lead and direct fire ground operations including under emergency conditions.
