AN AVAILABLE SALESMAN
Am delighted to present myself as a fully qualified candidate for your remote
sales position in Asheville. I don’t mind traveling either.
First real job: Hired by Sangamo Electric to sell kilowatt hour-meters within a
totally engineer environment . . . without any sort of degree. Had a 94% sales
penetration record to those Utilities, Municipalities, Cooperatives within my
Michigan and Toledo area of responsibility and established a distributor/dealer
network. They also produced a self-correcting time-switch that I sold to Nae-
gele Outdoor (now Lamar) for their remote locations. Utilities are not fast nor
casual technical buyers. We also sold capacitors for Sangamo electronics divi-
sion, when needed. Having attended the Navy electronics in Millington, TN
proved useful. I did business with HEATH KIT as well as Electro-Voice in Michi-
gan to a limited extent.
While a sales engineer in training (one year), I was given the task to rewrite the
technical manual on thermal demand metering: Facts About Demand. I nailed
it to everyone’s surprise as I wasn’t an electrical engineer but scored high.
The hobby fad of “slot racing” happened and the numbers were beyond belief.
I had to open a center. After eight years the fad faded and I sold the store. It is
still there. I worked two years for Bill Korr Sales. All his lines came to me.
My last year I had gross sales of $3.7 mil. Those lines included X-acto (put it in
K-Mart), Dungeon & Dragons (the game), Estes Model Rockets and 34 other
great lines that you would not know . . . unless you are a modeler or a crafts
person. My customers ranged from Meijer and K-mart to mom and pop
retailers, plus three national distributors, yada yada yada.
Moved to Florida and entered the Marine Industry as an independent
manufacturers’ representative. In six months I placed Cetrec as the autopilot
of choice with The Moorings Charters, and Hunter Marine; plus Achilles inflat-
able boats with Ft.Lauderdale Marina. “Lauderdale Marina” is one of the most
respected marinas in on the Atlantic East Coast.
While traveling, I entertained myself by taking up photography. I managed to
have 27 covers . . . mostly regional. However I won a Nation Addy for S.D.
Warren Paper Company. As a bit of a lark, my wife and i started a monthly tab-
loid in Naples, Florida, We reached 17,500 copies. we were repeatively told
there was no room within that demographic,
We became grandparents and moved after our grandchildren and found our
way to Asheville . . . which is close enough and where our kids come and visit
us now.
I am a seasoned, proper, road warrior, a trade show trooper. One that can get
the job done for you in a professional and prompt fashion.
One of my customers told me once: “Jim, you are the toughest S.O.B. that
calls on us and the most honest. You are always welcome to stay our home
when in town.” I think that an adequate recommendation . . . I’ve always sold
based upon the available profit of an item and/or program. A good return
beats the pants off sizzle. There’s no better motivator than margin times turn.
