Capital One – McLean, VA. 07/2018 - Current

Lead Platform Engineer

Responsible to provide Carrier Networks and oversee network design and Tier-3 operations support for Capital One’s Networks. This process also involves the financial justification that would warrant the implementation of an Optical Ring to support Capital One’s business objectives. Collaborate with Core Engineering and Production teams on various design projects using in-depth knowledge of the latest design trends and software to lead the way.

Key Projects Delivered:

Edge Network Engineering, performed the following projects:

oTasked with the responsibility of creating a Versa SDWAN Dashboard to monitor important CORE areas of the SDWAN network that supports Capital One. Through research, developed multiple Dashboards to track the performance of the Ashburn, Chicago, San Jose and Seattle SDWAN infrastructure and key performance Appliances to better monitor and focus in on areas which require immediate attention.

Worked with Versa Networks, whose SDWAN product utilized by Capital One, to develop "Threshold Alarms" to track the committed rate and full Burstable MPLS, INET as well as Non-Burstable circuits in Capital One's Back Office network connectivity by generating network Alarms if network traffic goes over the circuit committed and FULL port size of the provided circuit.

oThis method would track circuit performance whether a dedicated full bandwidth ckt. or a burstable variable rate circuit such as MPLS or INET. Developed a method in the Versa Director by creating Threshold Alarms to track the utilization of circuits that reach a pre-defined utilization point therefore tracking how often the threshold is breached. This will trigger whether the circuit is performing to expectations and an upgrade or downgrade may be needed.

Worked with Versa Networks and the Edge Network team to Design & Implement Guest wireless QOS/COS “Best-Effort” Filter. This COS filter will track the incoming Guess Wireless traffic into the Versa Appliance from the client side, setting this traffic as “Best-Effort” for the outbound WAN interface. Therefore in a WAN bandwidth starvation scenario, all priority traffic will be sent first and Guess Wireless traffic will only be transmitted on a "Best Effort" basis.

oThis method was created in order to track Guess Wireless traffic entering our Back Office locations so priority company traffic is not hindered due to Guess Wireless traffic.

oCreated a QOS/COS filter and deployed throughout Capital One's Back Office environment setting Guess Wireless traffic to the lowest network traffic therefore giving priority throughput to higher priority company traffic.

Worked with the ESM team and our internal Carrier team to develop the Distributed Antenna Systems RFP to engage an EF&I vendor to support Capital One's DAS system.

oWorking with the ESM team, researched credible DAS vendors to perform EF&I support to Capital One's Neutral Host DAS systems.

oResulting support and hiring of recommended DAS vendor through collaborative buy in and support.

Worked with Capacity Planning and developed performance monitoring capabilities for the 100 Gig Point-to-Point DCI network circuits, MPLS & INET connecting Capital One's four Regional Data Centers in Ashburn, Chicago, San Jose and Seattle through CA Performance. This effort will track our network utilization for these very important circuits and alert us on needed upgrades and performance degradation.

oNeeded a concise and dependable format in order to monitor and track the utilization of key network circuits to the company.

oWorked with Capacity Planning to develop circuit performance statistics to be monitored and tracked.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Conduct the network feasibility study needed to justify the deployment of an Optical Ring.

Conduct the financial assessment for the justification of an Optical Network Ring.

Perform the site assessment for the physical infrastructure needed to support a fully resilient Optical Ring infrastructure.

Layout the overall network design needed to meet business goals and requirements in support of the core network infrastructure.

Develop test prototypes and scenarios to ensure a solid and resilient network infrastructure.

Create network design drawings depicting the optical networks and how they interconnect into Capital One’s core network infrastructure.

Maintain engineering records and designs

Coordinate with other engineering teams and management to insure smooth and reliable transfer on network data.

Maintain the Optical Network inventory on rings.

Create SDWAN network diagrams depicting connectivity on the Optical Rings and off ring.
