Summary of Experience

1988-1990: Served a two-year Hmong-speaking mission for the LDS Church.

1990-1992: Taught Hmong at Brigham Young University’s MTC

2000: First Registered Hmong Interpreter through the Judicial Counsel of California.

1996-2005: Worked full-time as a Hmong interpreter in numerous trials, depositions and other legal proceedings, including:

o1996 – 2000: Interpreter for the office of Hearing and Appeals, Social Security Administration. Fresno, Ca. (Social Security appeals hearings.)

o1996 –2000: Telephonic Interpreter for AT&T Language Lines as a telephone interpreter.

o2000: First Registered Hmong Interpreter with Judicial Counsel of California.

oTranslated numerous documents from English to Hmong in many areas especially Legal and Medical.

oInterpreted over 500 depositions in all areas of law.

o2000-2005: Full-time Hmong interpreter for the Fresno County Superior Courts.

2001-2005: Radio Host for KBIF, Hmong Radio, Fresno, Ca. Hosts radio programs on current events and politics.

2008-2013: Hosted “The Lee Fong Show” on the Hmong Television Network

Served as an expert witness regarding Hmong language and culture in criminal and civil trials.

Authored scholarly linguistic papers regarding Hmong language games and Hmong Post Verbal Intensifiers.

Taught Hmong and Lao culture classes to state employees.

Currently compiling data to write the most exhaustive Hmong Language Grammar.

Practiced law in Fresno California from 2005-2020. (Retired)

Currently working towards a PhD in Linguistics.

Significant Interpreting Assignments

1999 Interpreted for the Melody Park Gang Murder trial in Fresno County Superior Court. (3 Month Trial)

2000 Sole Interpreter for civil lawsuit between rival factions of the Hmong United Christian Liberty Evangelical Church. Both the plaintiffs and defendants were native Hmong who refused to allow any other interpreter during this 7-week trial and over 21 days of pre-trial depositions.

2001 Sole Interpreter for the Hmong (Mongolian Boys Society) Gang-Rape Trial. This 6-month trial had the most defendants of any trial in Fresno County history.

2002 Interpreted for General Vang Pao during a rally for the Hmong Republican Committee of California.

Interpreted well over 500 depositions and over 1,500 court and trial proceedings in Oregon, California and Arizona over the last 24 years.

HMONG LANGUAGE/CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

1988-92 Translator for LDS Church. Includes missionary discussions, General Conference (Simultaneous Oral Interpreting), and various other printed materials.

1990-92 Developed and implemented the Hmong Language Training program at the Missionary Training Center, an intensive 9 week full-time language program, at Brigham Young University, Provo, UT.

1990-92 Wrote White Hmong Functional Grammar and Language Lessons ‘90
