CONSULTANT (SUB-DIRECTOR) OF 1ST SURGICAL DEPARTMENT OF ATHENS NAVAL AND VETERANS HOSPITAL
As a general surgeon my duties covered surgical procedures that mainly involved opening the abdomen, most commonly specialising in diseases and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. I have a special interest in bariatric and colorectal surgery and I had my own consultancy hours at outpatient surgery centers. Moreover, I am also interested in trauma surgery being a military surgeon. In addition to the time spent on operating patients, meeting and consulting them, I have been attending administrative duties too per departmental policy.
Naval Hospital of Athens serves a population of 400.000 on 320 beds. I worked at the general surgical department for thirteen years. The unit, which has 18 general surgery beds, is a teaching facility of the Medical University of Athens and operates all kind of surgical procedures.
The number of annual outpatients is approximately 10.000, the number of inpatients is about 1200 from which I provided care for various outpatient cases once a week. I performed about 320 operations a year (in the naval hospital and in various private hospital), and had 1-2/7 on call rota for general surgery. I spent 30% of my time with acutely ill patients, independently made therapeutic decisions and performed operations also unsupervised, including bariatric-colorectal-breast and thyroid surgery. General surgical cases mostly were done under on-call settlements. I’m familiar with gastric bands, gastric by-pass and sleeve gastrectomy procedures, which is one of my special fields of interest, likewise advanced laparoscopy. I was responsible for collecting and providing data for the national surgery registry.
From July 2018 as a Head of Bariatric Clinic in King Salman Specialist Hospital (500 beds)my duties cover Bariatric-metabolic and colorectal laparoscopic procedures (40-50 per month),OPD and training for the residents
