Selected Achievements

Directed and coordinated 2 key General Motors China / US joint ventures producing 3M vehicles per year and earning company over $25B in the last twelve years.

Supported efforts to commercialize GM’s Ultium and Hydrotec technologies into non-automotive applications by leading the development of relationships and co-development agreements with Wabtec & Komatsu. Key is to leverage these new off-highway applications with GM’s next generation medium duty trucks and our existing Navistar partnership.

Executed 2 major technology development agreements with Chinese partners, including $1.4B joint venture for emerging market vehicles, and $2.9B portfolio of electric-powered vehicles.

Formed and managed international powertrain joint venture with Fiat, liquidating partnership when Fiat exercised put option, and creating new GM powertrain manufacturing facilities in Turin, Italy and Sao Jose, Brazil

Key in restructuring Isuzu to avoid bankruptcy and ensure security of GM investments, gaining GM IP rights for 3 diesel engines, and 60% ownership of 2 manufacturing and 2 R&D facilities supporting these engines.

Director of China and OEM Alliances 2018–Present

Role expanded to head China & OEM alliance activities as part of a lean global Corporate Development and M&A organization with a team of 5 executives and 37 other staff. The role includes developing enterprise-wide, cross-functional strategies to identify opportunities and execute programs to deliver efficiency, growth, and profitability targets in rapidly changing markets. The team seeks out and builds new partnerships to share expertise and resources while divesting assets not aligned to future demand. Managed OEM partnerships with, Komatsu, Wabtec, Allison, Navistar, Isuzu, Honda, Cummins & Ford.

Led the dissolution of an extremely successful Diesel engine joint venture with Isuzu. 25 years ago, I led the development and execution of the DMAX engine joint venture to meet strong product demand. This resulted with both partners having realized 700% return on original investments and GM increasing its HD Truck Market share from 3% to 30%.

Supported critical, strategic expansion of GM / Honda collaboration to significantly scale up development and production of electric batteries and vehicles, directly leveraging Chinese partners' lower-cost expertise and access to forecast dominant EV market.

Assumed leadership of key but poorly managed Navistar truck joint venture to fix cost overruns and quality problems, negotiating new agreement and repairing partner relationship; plans in place to stabilize product, increase sales and profitability.

Drove major component' of GM's strategic switch to EV focus by directing sale of diesel assets to Austrian partner Punch, retaining GM access to diesel engine products and services while eliminating long-term costs of ownership.

Developed innovative strategy and new processes allowing GM to share products with competitor Ford to leverage savings and internal competencies using simple leadership scorecard to keep efforts and contributions balanced.

Received GM President's Award for success in Isuzu JV restructuring, Fiat JV liquidation, and SGM IP royalty negotiations.

Director of China Alliances 2010–2018

Promoted to direct GM joint venture with China-based SAIC Motor to manufacture and sell GM products in local market. Led top-level cross-functional initiatives to maximize GM's royalties and returns by building relationship of trust with partner, bringing high level of trust to formerly tense relationships, and greatly improving productivity and efficiencies.

Boosted GM's royalties from GM / SAIC Motor JV by 50% year-over-year between 2016 and 2024, for average annual royalty payments of $1B.

Accelerated JV engineering service agreements by developing universal master agreement and supporting process to drive faster execution, enabling capture of $3.5B in new services with Chinese partners between 2010 and 2018.

Negotiated $1.4B manufacturing agreement with Chinese partners for low-cost GM products profitable in emerging markets Asia, LATAM, MEA, and Eastern Europe, generating further $40M in intellectual property payments from SAIC.

Formed $2.98B development partnership with Chinese partner SGM for lower-cost, competitively priced electric vehicles, scheduled for 2021 launch; currently expanding partnership to include Honda. $200M in IP payments already collected from SGM and Honda.

Director of Global Powertrain Cost Reduction 2006–2010

Role expanded to head global Powertrain division cost management strategy, leading cross-functional management team in identifying cost savings pipeline for engines, transmissions, drivetrains, control systems, hybrids, and fuel cell products.

Created value stream map to better coordinate engineering and purchasing processes to minimize cost creep and post-launch product changes, significantly improved GM results in annual supplier survey results while improving cross-departmental working efficiencies and product quality.
