WORK EXPERIENCE

Grace Medical Practice, LLC Atlanta. GA 01/19-12/20

My Primary Care NP Intern training and skills were obtained during my two-year clinical rotation at Grace Medical Practice, LLC, a Family Medical Practice office located in Atlanta, GA. The practice included one Physician, Fidelia Osinubi, MD; an Officer Manager, Front Desk Receptionist, Med Tech, and outsourced Lab Technician, and 4-6 Medical Interns. Working at the office daily Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm, unlike the medical interns who visited one day a week, my competency levels and skill set quickly transitioned from caregiver to provider as patient-centered care was provided to Adult and Geriatric patients. Primary prevention and wellness were accomplished through yearly physical assessments and screenings. My ability to diagnose acute illnesses and provide treatment plans using evidence-based practices and provider judgment increased as services were provided to the patients who sought care. Diagnoses were later confirmed or ruled out with lab results and/or diagnostic testing. Collaborating with other clinicians and making referrals to specialists showed that the best care practices were performed. Being in the same primary care setting for over 2 years to include post-graduation allowed many opportunities to provide care and management of long-term illnesses and diseases to include Diabetes, Hypertension, Cardiac Disease, Autoimmune Diseases (Thyroid disease, Lupus, RA), Obesity, Skin/ Wound Care, Cancer, Women’s Health, STIs and other infectious diseases, and more. Providing care for those experiencing various modalities further enhanced my desire to care for the Geriatric population, but nothing compared to the exposure and experiences acquired as I was entrusted by my preceptor physician, who was also the Director at Bonterra Transitional Nursing and Rehab in East Point, GA, to provide weekly NP care to her patients during my last semester. My confidence as a competent provider was affirmed while caring for and advocating for the patients at Bonterra, in the office, and via telehealth. While the COVID outbreak was a trying time for healthcare providers and devastating for others, I felt most accomplished as my clinical rotation and experiences were not cancelled as others, whereby, I gained one-on-one knowledge from my precepting physician about running a Primary Care Practice and hands-on experiences caring for patients. This time was most rewarding as I was the only student providing care for patients when there were usually 4-6 students. Secondly, as COVID bought everything to a halt, I was instrumental in implementing Telehealth in our Primary Care office and setting up new policies and procedures, such that our clients were able to continue seeking care via telehealth during this very scary time, while keeping the office open and the staff safe. When COVID restrictions were lifted and medical interns were allowed back into the office, my duties included serving as the Lead Intern, responsible for showing the new interns how to chart for the physician, present their patients seen, and perform a telehealth visit, as well as front office management, medication refills (except narcotics) and lab work follow-ups. My clinical rotation afforded me with a plethora of opportunities to help become a caring and competent provider, furthermore, enhancing the skills needed to manage a primary care office, coding correctly for Medicaid, Medicare and third-party payors, documenting in EHR as a provider, partnering with collaborating providers and specialist, managing care of patients in a long-term care facility, providing telehealth care services, and advocating for my patients.

During my next elevation to SN IV, things were put on hold as the hospitals were transitioning into a new health system. So too, it was now time for me to move forward professionally. I am most grateful for the time spent at AMC South, and everything I learned. I feel most rewarded when I communicate with some of the workers from AMC South who share the joy, they had working with me, especially when I was Charge Nurse, in that I was hands-on in helping my staff and how they incorporated the activities we shared on the unit such as the Elf-on-the-Shelf during Christmas and Valentine’s Day, with their families.
