Steel and iron permanent molds can be used over and over and over. Many times permanent mold will produce a higher quality casting and will be used in higher volume applications. This production benefit can be related to the solidification rate. As aluminum is being poured into an iron mold, there is a quicker heat transfer to the iron, which produces a “tighter” grain structure, creating a denser product and generally a smoother finish and better tolerances. Permanent mold tooling is more expensive, but per- unit price is often reduced.
