I worked for the Alaska Marine Highway System as a second mate/watch officer on the state fleet of roll-on, roll-off passenger ferries in Southeast Alaska. Beginning in 1998 I worked with the officers, technicians and rotating scientists on five NOAA research vessels: RAINIER (1,800 GRT) MILLER FREEMAN (1,600 GRT) OSCAR SETTE (2,000 GRT) KA’IMIMOANA (2,100 GRT) and HI’IALAKAI (2,100 GRT). I worked as a Survey Technician where I assisted scientists with the acquisition of oceanographic data using CTD rosettes. On the Oscar Sette, Ka’imimoana, and Hi’ialakai, I worked as an Able Seaman and Third Mate where I assisted in the Deployment and recovery of Tropical Atmosphere Ocean monitoring buoys, Tsunami buoys, ADCPs and other sub-surface oceanographic data buoys. From 2/1998 to 6/1999, I worked as a Survey Technician on the 1,800 GT hydrographic survey ship Rainier conducting surveys in Southeast Alaska for the purpose of nautical chart production. The hydrographic surveys employed the following types of sonar systems: Seabeam MKII medium depth multibeam sonar, Klein SS IV side-scan sonar, Reson Seabat 8101multibeam sonar and Innerspace/Echotrack single-beam sonar systems. I was involved with the installation and monitoring of DGPS base stations and I assisted with tide station monitoring. I assisted the engineers and technicians with the installation of multibeam sonar systems into the survey boats. I drafted detail drawings of sonar equipment using AutoCAD software. I also wrote descriptive reports of completed hydrographic surveys for submission to the National Ocean Service hydrographic branch.

I was responsible for surveying tide station vertical control benchmarks and for the daily calibration of hydrographic survey equipment. I worked with civil engineers to complete the processing of hydrographic survey data and with other aspects of the dredging engineering process.
