Re: Director of Nursing
My career in nursing, has been filled with many experiences, which have advanced my professional career.
As a registered nurse, I was given the opportunity to grow my knowledge of medical/surgical, pregnancy, birth and newborn care. As a certified nurse-midwife I was given the challenges of working in clinics, birth centers and women’s shelters; and with many high risk families. It was my honor to attend over 4000 births: both natural and as a first assistant at C-sections. I have worked at a long term care facility as a supervisor and have utilized my knowledge as a behavioral health nurse. Nurse-Family Partnership was the perfect extension of midwifery care, which allowed me to continue to work with families and watch them develop within a nursing framework. Most Recently I have been the Director of Nursing Education for an LVN to RN associate degree program in San Antonio, Texas.
My work with the nurse-family partnership program for 8 years was a wonderful opportunity to grow in the role of Nurse-Manager. As a nurse home visitor, and as a supervisor of the NFP team I developed a strong sense of community health nursing. My team was comprised of 8 RN’s providing home visits in two New Jersey counties. I have also had the pleasure of managing another team covering two counties while their supervisor was on maternity leave, including hiring nurses and organizing events.
I have been involved with several research studies and have developed a format of standardized charting for the NJ NFP sites. With my NFP team, I developed a Nurse Self-Assessment Checklist which helps identify nurses with the aptitude and qualifications needed to be Nurse Home Visitors. Through my experience with NFP Teams I designed a system of interviewing skills which promotes hiring a strong team of NFP nurses. I had mentored other NFP supervisors and administrators as they began the setup for new NFP sites. Under my guidance, the nurses were involved with educating other home visitation programs and my team became a model for the NJ Central Intake system.
Education: My BS-RN degree was earned in 1982 at Rutgers University. I graduated as a Nurse-Midwife in 1991, and earned my Master’s Degree in Adult Health Nursing from UMDNJ in 1996. I completed a Post-Master’s Adult Education program in 1997. My nurse-midwifery and MSN programs had extensive education in pharmaceutical studies, women’s health, adult health, neonatal care and nursing processes. I taught nurse-midwifery students for 14 years, paramedic students for 4 years, and undergraduate students at Felician College for 2 years. I have been the director of Nursing Education at Career Point College for 4 months; and in a short time, I made many positive changes and improvements in the RN program.

Sincerely, Barbara L. Scanlon, RN-MSN

Ex-Career Point nursing students find renewed hope

- “Our nurses, our faculty, our administrators, picked up the ball very quickly and ran with it,” said Barbara Scanlon, director of Coastal Bend’s nursing program, who held the same position at Career Point. January 03, 2017
- Scanlon said many of her former students told her, “'Oh, thank God, you’re here.'” Scanlon said like dozens of students and faculty at Career Point, she was left wondering what to do next. She said it was a shock that day, but turns out, “It’s also a blessing.” While helping to organize the day-long event before classes begin next week, Scanlon said Coastal Bend is giving those students renewed hope.

Coastal Bend College in Pleasanton holds orientation for 100 new students
By Jessie Degollado – Reporter Posted: 7:07 PM, January 03, 2017
SAN ANTONIO - Coastal Bend College, a small state school in Pleasanton with an enrollment just over 5,000 students, held an orientation day Tuesday for up to 100 former nursing students from Career Point College in San Antonio.
The for-profit vocational school abruptly closed last October after questions were raised over its handling of federal financial aid funds.
Mark Allred, who was both an instructor and student at Career Point, said, “I lost the best job of my career and I lost my scholarship in one day.”Allred said he hopes to get his degree as a registered nurse by the end of the year.
Allred, who lives near the Pleasanton campus, said, “It was very convenient, affordable and we could finish
