Principal Staff Engineer
Motorola Mobility
2000 – September 2016
RF Architecture and System Design for Cellular Handsets – Initially used Motorola developed transceivers which then became Freescale and currently using Qualcomm Architecture. Responsibility included system design including Simulations, System Analysis for Noise Figure, Intercept, Interference and Sensitivity predictions.
Multiple Access technologies include GSM, WCDMA, CDMA and LTE.
AGPS Receiver Design. Implemented Assisted GPS on one of the first mobile phone using SIRF technologies GPS receiver. Worked closely with SIRF Engineers and Management teams to resolve field issues and obtain best in class performance. Developed field test criteria to ensure performance reliability.
Schematics, Layout, Packaging – Worked on several mobile phone developing Schematics, Optimizing Layout and working with the Mechanical Team for Packaging. Layout was optimized for minimum insertion loss, low RF parasitic, isolation for de-sense purpose. Succeeded in several products with minimum board spins. Shipped product in record 6 months when typical turns were several more months.
ODM/JDM Engineering – Worked with the Mechanical Team on implementing Qualcomm Radio Architecture on packaging include Schematics and Layout up to a producible design. Worked with our JDM partner COMPAL from prototype to production helping resolve issue thru Certifications and successful launch.
Certification labs – Experience in dealing with Certification Labs as was involved in several mobile products.
Cost Reduction – Working on high volume products have always had cost in mind to maximize profitability.
Engineer T4
Northrop Grumman Corporation – Rolling Meadows, Il
1989 - 2000
Wideband GaAs MMIC Amplifier Design covering 2 -7 GHz, Logarithmic Amplifier Design. These designs were widely used and shipped in Microwave System Products.
Microwave/ Millimeter wave Transceiver Design - Extensive use of GaAs MMICs this was a state of the art transceiver covering frequencies up to 45 GHz. Several sub modules were developed and integrated as a subsystem. Each sub module had to meet the Gain, IP3, Noise Figure and Spurious Response. Other challenges include meeting all the specification as a integrated system in the presence of radiation within the metal enclosure within which all the open sub modules isolated with walls and open channels. The enclosure included Switches, Amplifiers, Mixers, Filters and Synthesizer.
28 GHz LMDS Transceiver Design - This involved Front End module design to be implemented for commercial Satellite Local to Multipoint Distribution System. Module included Filters, Amplifiers, Mixers and Synthesizer.
DRO Design – Developed several Dielectric Resonator Oscillators in the range of 6 to 18 GHz. These were based on GaAs MMIC and high Q ceramic Puck housed in a metal enclosure with fine tuning capability.
MMIC Multi-Throw Switch/Filter Design – This effort was to replace passive MIC filters and switch bank used in several systems with an active Band Pass Amplifier Bank. This would improve the front end noise performance and would be smaller in size.
MIC Filter Design – Designed several Filters using Printed Circuits on Ceramic. Filters covered were Band Pass, High Pass, Low Pass and Band Reject Filters with different topologies.
Synthesizer Design – Design was based on MMIC and multiple conversions to improve phase noise. Comb generator was used along with multiple mixers. Filters were also key to filter spurious frequencies.
MIC Module and Subsystem Design – Developed Aluminum Nitride based Microwave Modules for subsystem covering Amplifiers, Filters, and Mixers. Worked closely with the vendor in the development process and successfully launched the subsystem into production. Advantage of Aluminum Nitride is its ability to disperse heat improving reliability permitting high power surface mount IC’s.
Engineer II
Motorola
1988 - 1989
High isolation Switch Design. This was a difficult task with goal of obtaining 100 dB of isolation in a single cavity. Various options were investigated for low cost approach including feasibility. Eventually several PIN diodes strategically spaced were used and configured to maximize isolation. Eventually was able to obtain better than 90 db of isolation. The design was limited by cavity modes as well as printed circuit board isolation.

1987 - 1988
Designed PIN diode switches using MIC technology with goal of minimum insertion loss and good isolation.
Design of phased array antennas for Microwave Landing Systems. This effort involved design and simulations. Designed and implemented using printed antenna for low cost. This effort exercised my Antenna theory background from academics to real life design.
Automated the radiation pattern measurement using the HP 8510 and HP9000 series computer and implemented in anechoic chamber.
Summer Intern

Designed GaAs MMIC SCFL prescaler operating to 4 GHz. Effort involved IC design and simulation using 1 micron gate length process. The challenge was stretching the operational frequencies at process limits.
Designed wide band low noise amplifier. Involved design and simulation optimization including Monte Carlo Analysis.
Designed Varactor Tuned Oscillator.
Involved in FET and Spiral MMIC transformer modeling. This effort led to understanding the importance of modeling when designing IC’s for first pass success.
