Career Statement:
In my career, I have been involved in the computer industry in a variety of capacities - including project manager, scientific programmer, business analyst, system designer, tech writer, and Instructor. I am a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) and a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD) for Visual Studio.NET. My expertise is in Visual Basic.NET development, with significant knowledge of VBA, and Visual C#. I have developed applications for the Web as well as for the Windows environment. Most of my systems involve interfacing with SQL Server (2008 R2) and/or Access databases. I am a motivated Developer, and have contributed to all phases of the system development lifecycle. I also hold the Certification of a Scrum Master, and I am a Scrum Trainer.
Business & Employment Summary:
Agile/Scrum Trainer (December 2012 – Present)
As a contract Trainer for VMEdu (based in Phoenix, AZ) I have been teaching Agile & Scrum classes to experienced programmers, business analysts, and company stakeholders. I have been using proprietary courseware developed by VMEdu, augmenting it with data from Mountain Goat Software and other recognized Gurus in the world of Scrum and Agile methodologies.
Contract Programmer/Analyst (September 2003 – December 2012)
As a contract Developer, the following are several of the most recent projects with which I was involved:
As a Programmer/Analyst on contract for a year and a half, I was a member of the IT Department of Transocean Offshore Deepwater Drilling, a leading international provider of offshore contract drilling services for oil and gas wells. The system I worked on daily was a windows-based application called the Rig Management System (RMS). The SQL Server database utilized in this project was enormous, containing 315 tables and requiring 156.5 GB of storage. Total numbers of records (rows) in the database were 77,958,715. Our work included adding and modifying the tables in the database.
On the programming side, there were 233 forms created and 44 business classes defined. The system was accessed by upwards of 2,000 Users every day on Drilling Rigs around the world.
My specific job involved troubleshooting glitches in the system as reported by personnel aboard the Rigs, and adding approved enhancements to the system. We utilized Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 as our database, and Visual Studio as our development tool. My skill set also included Visual Basic (both VB6 and VB.NET), SQL, SharePoint, and Team Foundation Server 2012.
The project just prior to the Transocean assignment was as a VB.NET Developer on a 3-man 3-month contract with Tyco Chemical, a major global oil & gas pipeline company. It was of a smaller scale, but it involved a great deal of interfacing with the engineers, electrical and civil, who developed the calculations initially. I contributed to the re-design of a major pipeline application, concurrently migrating the code from VB6 to VB.NET, and changing the environment from Windows-based to Web based, using ASP.NET.
On a short term project for Continental Airlines, I designed a Windows-based system to permit the User to readily identify the location and availability of maintenance facilities for diverse types of aircraft and differing types of required maintenance.
On contract to Shell Oil Company I was part of a team that developed a data-centric system for tracking the utilization of heavy field equipment. Instead of using a database management system, we elected to utilize Excel for our data storage.
Hilton Computer Strategies (May 2001 – September 2003)
For two and a half years, I was a full-time Instructor for Hilton Computer Strategies in Houston, Texas, delivering Microsoft Official Curriculum courses. My primary areas of expertise are Visual Basic.NET, and database utilization, especially Access and SQL Server. I also delivered courses in web-development utilizing Server-side scripting (via Active Server Pages - ASP.NET), Client-side scripting (DHTML) and in interfacing with databases via Structured Query Language (SQL).
Independent Software Instructor (June 1998 – May 2001)
On a contractual basis as a Microsoft Certified Trainer I delivered instruction on a national basis. I taught the Microsoft Official Curriculum Visual Basic courseware - versions 3 through .NET - a total of 107 times, while also delivering courseware prepared by AppDev (Applications Developers Training Company of Minneapolis), Wave Technology, Global Training Network, Inc., and others. I also taught C# and SQL.
Computer Professionals Company (November 1995 – June 1998)
I managed a software development company whose major clients included Exxon-Mobil, Shell Oil, Texaco, the City of Houston, as well as numerous small to mid-sized companies. For our mid-sized and small-sized clients I was instrumental in analyzing their current business situation, and proposing solutions that would embrace a newer more efficient business model; I often led or supervised the team that implemented the newer technology.
My ability to critique current business practices, and to propose technologically efficient solutions, stems in great measure from my extensive experience in the computer applications development industry. I was responsible not only for systems design and implementation, but also for the generation of new business, and the preparation of presentations for current and prospective Clients.
As a Project Manager for CPC, I had a major role in monitoring the costs and schedules leading to the successful completion of all projects in my department. On occasion I wrote User documentation and conducted training classes in utilizing and adapting packaged software. I also conducted training classes in business procedures, assembler language programming, and database utilization -- as well as lower-level word processing, and spreadsheet software.
Harris County Hospital District (August 1993 – October 1995)
For two years I served as the Assistant Director of Management Systems for the Harris County Hospital District in Houston, Texas. My duties included extensive dialogue between the User community and the system designers in order to insure that the systems that were defined and implemented were responsive to the needs and requirements of the using departments. I created effective teams that worked symbiotically to accomplish the goals of the Hospital District and the outlying system of neighborhood clinics.
I participated in the development of numerous projects included the design and/or programming of student enrollment systems, accounts payable, accounts receivable, employee records systems, payroll systems, billing systems, mortgage and amortization systems, and inventory control methodologies.
