Overview:
Recent BSME graduate with defense related work experience. Creative thinker that excels in team environments and doesn’t shy away from obstacles.
Education:
Purdue University
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering West Lafayette, IN December 2016
oSpecialized Coursework: Programming Applications for Engineers / Engineering Economics / Manufacturing Processes / Noise Control / Engineering Acoustics
oTechnical Skills: CATIA, SolidWorks, MATLAB, LabVIEW, LMS Test.Lab
oOrganizations: American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Audio Engineering Society, Sigma Alpha Lambda Honors Society, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity
oProjects: Pneumatic Volleyball Setter (Senior Design Project), Inverted Pendulum Project (Control and Measurements Systems III), Foldable Electric Bicycle (Sophomore Design, 1st place)
Work Experience:
Research and Development Lab Assistant
Marvin Engineering Co. Inglewood, CA Summers of 2013 – 2016
Marvin Engineering Co. is a leading defense contractor for the US DOD as well as Raytheon, Lockheed-Martin, and Boeing.
Job Description:
oPrepped lab experiments by creating schematics, outlining procedures, and performing calculations and measurements
oRecorded, processed, and analyzed data for defense-related R & D experiments.
What I Learned:
oHow to design and fabricate a working prototype
oHow to acquire and analyze data in Excel
What I Contributed:
oDesigned, created drawings, BOM, ordered materials, machined, assembled, and implemented two functional Murphy bed-like steps, which improved safety.
oCreated an Excel spreadsheet that automatically organizes and analyzes high speed video data, which significantly reduced the analyzation cycle time.
oDesigned and implemented a door for the thermal shroud encompassing the prototype to allow changes to be made between tests without having to remove the entire shroud. This yielded more tests per day compared to the prior configuration, which improved productivity.
To whom it may concern,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in your company, where I can utilize my mechanical engineering skills to deliver creative and original solutions as I have demonstrated at Purdue University and during my internships at Marvin Engineering Co.
In my time at Purdue, I thrived in two team environments to deliver innovative solutions to complex problems. My first team was one that designed a foldable electric bicycle in my “Intro to ME Design” class, where our project won first place in our section. We modeled our design in CATIA and created a miniature 3D printed model. At the end of my tenure at Purdue, my senior design team created a Pneumatic Volleyball Setter. We identified the common problems with current volleyball setting machines and generated an affordable, efficient, and reliable prototype. We have filed a disclosure in the pursuit of a patent for the prototype. One of my roles was to conduct the engineering calculations in MATLAB to ensure the prototype was setting the ball with maximum efficiency. Purdue has given me the opportunity to build on my desire to think differently, while developing the necessary skills to do so successfully.
In addition to designing in a team environment, I also completed design projects on my own during my internships in the Research and Development department at Marvin Engineering. I was tasked with generating solutions to various R&D challenges. Solving these problems required designing in SolidWORKS, making computations in Excel, and even machining raw materials via mill, drill press, lathe, etc. Marvin Engineering Co. gave me the platform to apply my engineering coursework in a hands-on environment to deliver tangible results.
Through my time at Purdue and at Marvin Engineering Co., I have demonstrated the ability to analyze problems and develop solutions, both in a team as well as individually. Thank you for your consideration pertaining to my employment within your company and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Michael Jolly
