Entomology Lab Technician
Duties, Accomplishments and Related Skills:
Developed experiments to conduct research on Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and their effects on Ash trees in both the laboratory and out in the field. Surveyed local state parks to identify trees which have diseases and implemented strategies to restore them. Maintained the greenhouse on campus and collected EAB from barrels of logs daily, followed by data entry and storage of EAB to ensure survival for further research. Analyzed plants on campus for pathogens and parasites, such as spider mites, mealybugs, thrips, whiteflies, and aphids. Released predators of these parasites to assist with restoring the health of plants on campus, such as lacewings and mealybug destroyers. Cared for the insect zoo on campus, ensuring they stayed alive for the public to see on the annual Maryland Day. Insects included scorpions, hissing cockroaches, centipedes, tarantulas, and beetles. Worked closely with other local and state organizations.
- Experimented with different techniques to reduce parasitoid population in trees - introducing indigenous predators, foreign predators, and pesticides to different areas and comparing results
- Designed, created, and modified traps and releases
- Used aspirators to capture small insects in both the greenhouse and lab
- Classified specific trees based on leaves, branching, DBH, and canopy condition
- Classified insects to be parasitoids or not
- Extracted information from literature and relayed it to faculty in more digestible formats
- Specimen collection around campus to be used for teaching in the classroom Supervisor: Nancy Harding 301-***-****
