Education

The University of Iowa College of Engineering, Iowa City, IA December 2016 BS: Chemical Engineering GPA: 3.17/4.00

Minor: Chemistry

Elective Focus Area: Energy, Environment, and Soil Chemistry Professional Experience

Chemical Engineering Intern March 2015 – February 2017 360 Yield Center: Solon, IA

• Developed and tested ion selective electrodes (ISE) for infield soil testing machines, allowing farmers to test soil nutrient levels in 5 minutes. Resulted in increasing equipment sales from 0 to over 1,000 in 1.5 years.

• Formulated algorithms ensuring pH and nitrate operate correctly on machinery. Set parameters to notify users of technical/equipment errors.

• Project leader for the research and development of a potassium ISE that measures water soluble potassium in soil samples and provides an estimate of the exchangeable potassium present. Currently in manufacturing stage and release scheduled for Spring 2017.

• Measured temperature, soil:water ratio, and interfering ion effects on potentiometry for the nitrate, potassium, and hydrogen ISEs and confirmed a one-point calibration with a standard solution before each measurement would correct for these deviations from ideality.

• Designed testing cups for experiments utilizing SolidWorks CAD software. Design went into production and sales began in 2016.

• Performed quality inspections on manufactured pH and nitrate sensors before the sensors were integrated with the machinery to ensure accurate nutrient measurements. Engineering Project Experience

Cell Therapy for Spinal Cord Injuries: Commercial Manufacturing Facility Spring 2016

• As a team designed a process to produce a therapy for spinal cord injuries utilizing adult stem cells that was inherently safe, economical, and scalable for future increases in demand.

• Optimized a bioreactor system to produce the treatment under current good manufacturing practice regulations.

• Performed an economic analysis and determined the selling price to achieve an initial rate of return (IRR) of 50%.

• Presented the proposed design to a panel of professors and professionals in the chemical industry. Styrene Manufacturing Spring 2016

• Composed a process using ChemCAD to produce styrene from ethylbenzene that had optimized operating conditions to increase profitability.

• Assembled a final report of the proposed design and was presented to the class. Salt Mixer PID Control Strategies Fall 2015

• Collaborated with lab partners to test a salt mixer in a closed feedback control loop allowing the transfer function and characteristic equation for the system to be determined, so the salt concentration could be controlled more accurately. Saponification Kinetics Spring 2015

• Validated as a team the optimal operating conditions and the kinetic parameters for a saponification reaction of sodium hydroxide and ethyl acetate in a batch reactor. Separation of an Ethane Reformer Product Stream Fall 2014

• Constructed a model using ChemCAD to separate a feed stream containing 11 components into different product streams. Achieved goal to meet specifications on the streams’ purity and recovery at an economical cost. Leadership and Involvement

Youth Counselor, SPARK Central Day Camp: Coralville, IA May 2014 - August 2014

• Coordinated games and activities for kids while providing a safe and fun environment. Material handler, Scott’s Printing and Design: Dubuque, Iowa July 2013 - August 2013

• Operated machines to consolidate documents, posters, and business cards.

• Utilized computer skills to organize and optimize paper usage for printing. American Institute of Chemical Engineers: Member January 2014 - Present Students Today Alumni Tomorrow (STAT): Member August 2012 - Present
