Relevant Experience
2014 - Present
Helix Energy
Electrical Engineer - Electronics Technical Officer (ETO)
Expertise in designing PMS/DCS systems, allowed for the successful installation of a generator management and protection system on the Helix Producer 1.
Troubleshot and repaired the vessel’s 6 Diesel Generators which produce 2.2MW of power each, which are connected to the two main buses.
Ensured the power distribution to all the switchgear (1000Vac & 380Vac), VFDs, Thrusters, and the power train.
Always ensured all equipment had proper software, firmware, and redundant communications to hold our DP2 class status.
Tested the maintenance of all PLC’s, Switchgear, breakers, electronic, computer, audio/visual, and communications equipment. Manage and troubleshot hardware such as: Crio, Allen Bradley, Siemens’ S7-200 & 300, Wago, GE fanuc, Mitsubishi, Eaton, and ABB.
Managed all planned down maintenance on these systems and coordinated operations with technicians and office personnel.
Assured the Vessel’s design standards would pass FMEA and sea trials.
2011 – 2014
Chicago Bridge & Iron (CB&I)
Senior Electrical Engineer
Successfully designed/commissioned a $5 billion refinery which is now self-sufficient refinery capable of producing 160,000 barrels daily.
Worked on the FEED portion, and was promoted to project manager of the Power Management System (PMS), and the Electrical Monitoring & Control System (EMCS).
Successful in the implementation of 23 different substations (34.5KV &13.8 KV substations).
Developed and improved cost and planning studies, and met with refinery managers to maintain a strict schedule.
Managed construction of the PMS/DCS system per NEC and RETIE standards.
Answered RFIs for superintendents at the construction site to ensure construction requirements and NEC standards were on target.
Developed systems capable of communication across several different protocols (DNP, Modbus, OPC, Profibus). Different Vendors used their proprietary software with different protocols and I was the lead network communication advocate for the different systems.
I directed the electrical commissioning portion of the project. Wrote control narratives and FMEA’s for the electrical portion.
Designed and implemented all signals for the PMS/EMCS&PCS, which operated in several modes with power generated by 7 Turbines.
Designed PMS/EMCS and DCS signals which ran through redundant fiber optic network.
Other duties included electrical design and analysis of an assigned scope of work in a CB&I project including specific complex deliverables such as power generation systems, P&ID’s, substation & power distribution systems, UPS, lighting, and grounding systems. Work includes, among other things, conceptual studies, voltage drop calculations, specification development and electrical one-line diagrams. Able to effectively communicate technical solutions and concepts to others engineers and non-engineers. Capable of checking others work, maintaining project quality, familiar with industry codes and standards. Successful management of large projects.
2010 - 2011
SURF Subsea, Inc., Magnolia, TX
Vessel Systems Electrical Engineer/Electrical Technical Officer
Sole commander of the vessels’ electronics and electrical systems including troubleshooting any electrical/electronic problems with the Z-drives, bow thrusters, 480V main switch-board, Emergency Generators, Siemens’ PLC’s.
Purpose on the Vessel was to minimize any down time, by having qualified Electrical Engineer on board to troubleshoot any unexpected problems with PLC logic controllers and any electrical issues.
Managed the maintenance of the Dynamic Positioning System, which included conducting FMEA sea trials. Trained with Konsberg, L-3, and Converteam systems for offshore vessels.
DP systems surveyor
While at SURF, during my 4 weeks off rotation, I would sub-contract for Noble Denton. I successfully tested the integrity of the Dynamic Positioning systems on several different vessels by conducting advanced equipment analysis on their systems. This included examining, summarizing and incorporating key important information into their technical documents (FMEA’s). Completed first time FMEA documents for new vessels.
2007 - 2010
NASA, (ESC Group and ESTA Division), Houston, TX
Lead Design Engineer
Successful in implementing a program, using Labview, to upgrade a facility into a smart building.
Integrated the building’s HVAC, security system cameras, testing in progress alerts, and a general presentation of building capabilities into one central hub using Labview.
Implementation included compiling a proposal with a technical scope of work for NASA scientists, which detailed costs, instrumentation and process charts.
Solely responsible for the design, implementation and completion of test stands using Labview for the ESTA division of NASA.
Developed Instrument Setup Records-which includes all technical drawings (one-lines and P&ID), datasheets, cable schedules, any inputs and outputs to PLC’s.
In charge of any aspect of testing involving data acquisition and/or controls.
Programmed code and designed controls of lunar reactor, which was to make water, hydrogen and oxygen autonomously from lunar dust.
2005 - 2007
NASA, (Facility Manager of Building 354), Houston, TX
Lead Engineer
Successful in testing all fight batteries-Coordinate costs with Test Directors.
Design test stands for destructive and performance testing of batteries. Design safety controls for abusive testing.
Design and implement controls for vacuum chambers using Labview and PLC’s. Manage all other engineers and technicians within building.
Report the weekly status and activities for facility to my upper management. Responsible for all daily aspects of facilities in the energy systems test area-its engineers, technicians and preventative maintenance.
Serve as the primary source for all software developments using a series of programs.
2004 - 2005
NASA, Houston, TX
Test Engineer
Automated outdated systems in use, using AutoCAD, Labview, Cimplicity, Wonderware.
Responsible for: integrating PLC systems-to control from one local computer. Build G.U.I. for such systems for: data acquisition, test interaction with test director, controlling vacuum chambers, valves, sensors and pumps.
Designed safety interlocks into software so system will start up and shut down autonomously. Research, develop, and test electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Design electrical equipment, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.
