Daily activities consisted of the management of the engineering staffs’ daily work load of all our current clients. I designed, engineered, and implemented systems utilizing virtualization as a strong base followed by a solid backup and disaster solution. Also, conducted feasibility studies and performed necessary modification to align with the disaster solution. Implementation of new technology was coordinated with users to gain approval, further instructions, and procedures. I also developed manuals for testing the implemented technology and automated processes/developing systems, as well as the program documentation. One of my primary responsibilities as Virtualization Architect is to bring DR to all levels of virtualization and where possible automate that process. One way I accomplished this was to use SAN based synchronous and asynchronous replication to create copies of key virtual servers to a remote site (DNS, DC, File, Mail and SQL). These systems were then configured and set in a powered down state. I also cluster physical Mail and SQL servers to virtual servers whenever possible because doing this allows for very fast recovery of clustered applications in a complete disaster. I also create virtual remote domain controllers witch remain powered up and replicating ensuring minimal data loss in an outage. I also like to take full advantage of having a semi hot DR site to allow for load balancing for remote users and VDI or Citrix pools during brown outs or daily overload. I have also leveraged the use of VMware VCB for backing up VM’s to remote sites using combination iSCSI standard backup software over fast WAN connections. I architected these environments to easily transition in to the future automation models like Site Recovery Manager offering by VMware.

Daily activities consisted of the maintenance and deployment of virtual servers and virtual host using the VMware platform in the two IndyMac data center environments. I also worked with users to get approval on plans for proposed projects, instructions, or procedures. The ESX production and deployment environment which I implemented and designed consisted of multi host farm clusters which supported over 1,500 total Windows 2003 servers, Exchange Server, Windows XP and Vista VM’s on a mix of EMC storage and iSCSI storage servers. This installation has shown a ROI great enough to win the 2006 Virtual Vanguard Award for Best Overall ROI and Operational Benefits awarded at the 2006 VM World event.
As an architect, I also developed plans for testing manual and helped develop automated processes and developing systems. The other part of my job was to provide feasibility studies for data processing systems and performing modifications. All of our datacenter are HA and SOX compliant for the banking industry.
