As the senior technical writer, I produced installation, operation, and maintenance (IOM) manuals and a variety of procedures covering such as areas as function and pressure testing of the company’s proprietary riser gas handling (RGH) tool and ancillary systems.

Information was gathered first-hand from shop personnel to generate draft documentation that was subsequently reviewed by engineering SMEs. The documentation was refined through an iterative process in close collaboration with shop and engineering staff until generation of a final deliverable that was technically accurate and usable by manufacturing personnel.

I was responsible for online Help documentation in Spanish and English for SimDesk Technologies, Inc., a now-defunct Houston-based startup software company that had developed an innovative office productivity suite of applications composed of a word processor, spreadsheet, personal organizer, and e-mail client.
My principal duties included documenting all new software applications in both Spanish and English using Framemaker, as well as updating and editing application Help files in RoboHelp. A central aspect of my position was interfacing with software developers, SMEs, business/marketing analysts, and quality assurance specialists to produce the most up-to-date, detailed software documentation available.
The position required extensive end-user needs assessment and hands-on usability testing to identify systemic problems during the software development cycle. Documentation was generated from product requirements and technical specifications to meet the just-in-time (JIT) requirements of developers and the end-user community. Strict revision control and change tracking were maintained through MS Visual SourceSafe. A master documentation distribution list was also kept and updated regularly to ensure timely distribution of software documentation deliverables to developers and other internal users.

I was a contract technical writer, translator, and interpreter employed by Halliburton and Bechtel, two very successful and well-known engineering firms, on a multibillion-dollar project for Mexico’s state-owned oil company, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), to modernize and optimize several production and compression platforms located in the world’s sixth-largest oilfield in the Bay of Campeche, Yucatán, México.
Daily interaction and cooperation with a variety of engineering and project-controls SMEs were required to write, edit, proofread, and translate the following types of engineering documentation in Spanish and English:

I wrote, translated, and edited highly complex Ford auto dealership computer software manuals from English to Spanish. In addition, I was the head of the Spanish translation staff and was responsible for supervising, writing, translating, editing, and formatting manuals as well as the company’s proprietary online Help system consisting of program screens, Help windows, and error messages. Moreover, I personally wrote the following documents entirely in Spanish: Finance and Insurance Manual, Vehicle Inventory Manual, and Electronic Forms Manual, as well as substantial portions of the Electronic Mail Manual, Fixed Assets Manual, and Finance Company Manual.
The position required extensive needs assessment and hands-on usability testing to identify systemic problems and meet the specific challenges posed by different Spanish-speaking end users. Content-specific knowledge was obtained through regular in-house instruction and daily use of the software. Project planning and development were executed in close cooperation with software-launch teams to ensure software uniformity and ease of use while addressing the specific needs of individual countries within the broader Spanish-speaking user community.
