RETAIL EXPERIENCE
I first began working as a part-time bookseller with Manager Betty
Barton at Waldenbooks in Independence Center, 1042 E. Independence
Center Drive, 64057, in August 1986. I remained with Waldenbooks until
1994.
In October, 1994 I was hired at Borders Books
Music and Cafe #023 at 9108 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas 66212, as a
full-time bookseller. Along with ringing up sales, placing special
orders, labeling & shelving merchandise, creating displays, & other
tasks & assignments, I was also obligated to approach & greet every customer
on the sales floor that I encountered & ask if I could assist them,
carry through on that offer, place the item in their hands if it was in
stock, meanwhile promoting featured items with a number of
management-chosen talking points. Also, in line with the store's stated
expectations, I made many personal recommendations based on my own
knowledge about books & products in every category of
interest. I faithfully fulfilled & was recognized for surpassing the
obligations of my job position at Borders for 17+ years. I was named as
both Employee of the Month & Employee of the Quarter, & was also
informally commended for my job performance many times over the years by
managers & customers alike. Although, as mentioned, I was not
exclusively assigned to the registers, I still efficiently &
accurately rang up nearly the largest number of sales transactions of
any bookseller on a staff that usually consisted of more than 60
persons, right up to & including the last day of business on May 15,
2011, when the closing of the store (the oldest & largest Borders in
the Kansas City area) resulted in all employees of Borders #023 being
involuntarily terminated.
On July 25, 2011, immediately after it was announced that all Borders
stores nationwide would be closing, the General Manager of Borders #464,
1664 N.W. Chipman Road, Lee's Summit, Mo. 64081, Loni Bernard, contacted
me and asked me to begin work at her store to assist her staff in the
closing down process. I began work in Lee's Summit on July 28, and
continued my employment there until September 14, the last day of
operations at #464.
On October 24, 2011, I applied for seasonal work, and was hired, at
McKeever’s Price Chopper at 16611 E. 23rd Street, Independence, Mo. 64055.
I assisted customers throughout the holiday season.
My temporary hire position ended on the last day of January, 2012.
