University of Sheffield

-PhD in Civil and Structural Engineering, Feb. 2012-Aug. 2016.

The broad subject of my study is hydrodynamics, in particular studying the dynamics of flow structures under different flow conditions. One of the applications of this study is the flow around bridge piers and the resultant scouring of the bed materials from the area around the pier.

University of Mosul

-M.Sc. in Water Resources Engineering, Oct. 2003- Feb. 2006.

The thesis title was “Riprap Gradation Effect on Local Scour around Bridge Piers”. Equivalent to a Canadian Master’s degree according to World Education Services.

-B.Sc. in Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, Oct. 1996- June 2000 (Hons). Equivalent to a Canadian Bachelor’s degree according to World Education Services.

2014 – present, Assistant invigilator at the University of Sheffield for civil and structural engineering department and for other departments across the university.

SKILLS

Communication/presentation skills: My direct contact with people working in different engineering projects, as well as, my teaching and demonstration experience was in direct contact with students. Presented data clearly and confidently to both small and large groups, at home or abroad, in Arabic as well as in English, adapting style and content to the level of knowledge and understanding of others.

Management and organization: My experience in management and organizations includes. Managed several projects and collaborations in parallel, planned work to achieve goals and targets on time, set realistic objectives, developed creative solutions to problems. Headed and participated in different committees. As a university teacher, I have supervised students doing their graduation projects, and finished the designated modules on time. Participated in evaluation juries of graduation projects.

Computing and information technology skills: I am computer literate and have experienced using scientific softwares including Storm (Nortek), Flowsizer V2.0.3.0 (TSI), Dynamic Studio V3.31 (Dantec), PIV Lab. and SPSS, Inkscape. A beginner user of ANSYS Fluent. I have knowledge in different programing languages, I manged to analyse my PhD thesis data and plot the required figures using Matlab extensively. Extensive experience of Microsoft Office, Excel (preparing construction tenders), PowerPoint, and Latex, I use Auto-CAD occasionally.

Synthesizing, and writing: I have used to write daily progression reports of the engineering projects. Writing regular progression reports to my PhD advisors, in which their collection ended with a successful PhD thesis. Wrote scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals, as well as the technical replies to the questions raised by the reviewers.

Interpersonal skills: Coached and collaborated with other researchers, outlining objectives, methodology, and conclusions, actively listening to people and stimulating interest and discussion.

Exchanged constructive feedback and support and learned delegating responsibility.

Adaptability: Collaborated and communicated at different professional levels, and with people from diverse origins and cultures and from different scientific levels and backgrounds. Can work both independently and in team settings. Adapted to living abroad, increased my command of English, learned perseverance and self-motivation. From my work as a civil engineer I used to be in different weather conditions from very hot to freezing and wet weather conditions.

Project management: My management skills are two folds: my experience from my working as a project engineer where dealt with people from different backgrounds, e.g. builders, engineers; my research project management in both my M.Sc and PhD studies, planning the research with the available time and money to finish with reliable results and big pieces of writings (theses).
