DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Identify, supports and implements management initiatives to enhance quality nursing services within the surgical ward on each shift

Orientation of patient on ward layout upon admission

Monitor and observe patients vital signs and report any abnormality

Drugs are safely administered to all patients

Complies with Dangerous Drug Policy

Handover report at the end of shift to the oncoming staff

Documentation of nursing care provided to each patient and patients progress

Pre-operative and post-operative care of patient undergoing operation

Wound care using aseptic technique

Assisting patients with their personal hygiene

Maintain prescribed IV fluids and care of IV site

Tube feeding management

Feeding a patient who is unable to feed themselves

Female catheterization

Provides direct expert care to all patients allocated to

Develops and implement a nursing care plan for every patient allocated to.

During my one year of internship, I spent 3 months being attached in each unit stated below:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administer medications and treatments as per drug chart ordered by a doctor or according to established policies and protocols.

Monitoring of vital signs(blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, capillary blood glucose level, neuro-observation)

Assist and provide personal hygiene to those who need assistance by sponging, oral care, 4 hourly/2hourly turns with pressure area care.

Assist in specialized feeding (nasogastric feeding, jejunostomy feeding, etc.) and those who are unable to feed themselves.

Order correct diet and update it daily. Serve meals attractively at meal times.

Provide assistance to patients who are incapacitated by their illness.

Assess patients to identify appropriate nursing interventions.

Pre-op care and post-op care to patients undergo operation.

Assist patients to mobilize early after operation by encouraging patients to deep breath and do active and passive movements to enhance recuperation and prevent complication.

Wound care to those needing dressings.

Work in collaboration with team members to achieve the goal in maintaining the highest level of quality care for patients and clients.

Ensure the delivery of an effective, efficient and holistic nursing care to patients admitted into the unit.

Supervise junior nurses when appropriate.

Reports to the oncoming nurses (the next shift) during handing over on patient’s progressive report to assist in the continuity of care.

Reports to the doctors during ward rounds the condition of patients and communicates with intern doctors on pending procedures and patients urgent interventions if arises.

Monitor, assess, address, document and report symptoms and changes in patients conditions.

Maintenance of infection control protocols and practice in the prevention of cross infection and hospital acquired infections.

Be customer focused, courteous and adheres to professional code of conducts at all times.

RESPECT CLIENTS/PATIENTS CHOICE IN SELECTION OF HEALTH PRACTICE INCLUDING TRADITIONAL HEALTH PRACTICES.

MAINTAINING A CLEAN AND SAFE WORKING ENVIRONMENT

ATTEND TO EMERGENCY CASES AFTER HOURS AND INFORM THE DOCTOR ON-CALL IMMEDIATELY.

RINSING OF THE SOILED LINEN (BLOOD/FAECES) ON THE SLUICE ROOM.

EDUCATE AND COUNSEL PARENTS ON CHILD SAFETY, GOOD HYGIENE AND HEALTHY DIET TO AVOID RE-ADMISSION.

MONITOR THE LABOURING MOTHER AND DETECT ANY SIGNS OF ABNORMALTIY.

PERFORM DELIVERY IN A STERILE TECHNIQUE AND ALERT THE DOCTOR FOR ANY ABNORMALITY.

EDUCATE THE MOTHER ON THE IMPORTANCE OF BREASTFEEDING AND TEACH THEM ON HOW TO BREASTFEED.

ENSURE THAT THE NEWBORN HAS BEEN IMMUNISED WITHIN 24 HOURS AFTER BIRTH.

RINSING OF SOILED LINEN BEFORE IT’S BEEN TAKEN TO THE LAUNDRY.

ATTACH MUM TO BABY AFTER DELIVERY TO PROMOTE BONDING.
