Project 1 : Portal Re-engineering (PRE)

Description:

VMware has multiple portals that comprise the integrated front office applications. These include a) J2EE portals on Web Logic b) Enterprise Portlets and c) Homegrown LAMP Apps. Web Portals include front-office functionalities for the following: Digital River, Licensing, OEM, ISV, Partner/Public Eval, Download, Utility, Support, Account Mgmt etc. These portals have their native databases hosted in the EBS schema and are part of overall end user processes tied into back-office applications through BPEL interfaces on Fusion Middleware 10g.

VMware’s management team has determined that downtime of the current solution is unacceptably high. Specifically, portal downtime is high during scheduled/planned Oracle EBS upgrades. These portals are unavailable to the end-user as much as 18.4 hours/quarter due to planned downtime. Unplanned outages and reduced performance also contribute to overall downtime. In addition to minimizing downtime, business leaders are interested in the ability to make portal changes and improvements at an increased pace. Management also wants to reduce ongoing operating costs and reduce the number of portals resulting in a unified user experience.

VMware commissioned the Portal Re-Engineering project with the following objectives:

Create architecture and a roadmap aimed at achieving higher availability and stability.

Standardization of logging, error handling, monitoring, notification and technology stack leading to enhanced maintainability and manageability.
